What are the major issues for you?
Free healthcare: both parties are against it. I want it and think it is waaay past due in the U.S.
Getting money out of politics: both parties are against it. I think this will help our politics greatly and have pols concentrate on the people first instead of their donors like they do currently.
Higher wages: Dems are more for it but not at a high enough rate. Minimum wage nationally needs to be $20 at least. They are currently proposing $15.
War in Ukraine: Dems are more Gung ho than Republicans. I don't care at all and think we should pull out. Not our problem.
Taxes: Repubs want them low as possible and Dems like to create exceptions out the ass making tax policy as confusing as possible. I want a simpler progressive tax code with very few exceptions that tax rich people (over $500K) to be at least 50%.
These are my major issues and both are failures IMO.
Ok, so....
1) Free Healthcare: I understand the merits of this. We should really refer to this as single payer healthcare though, if we're being correct.
Just keep in mind that 17 countries have adopted a form of single payer healthcare. The free healthcare is funded by individual tax dollars. Here's the individual tax rates in those countries:
Norway: starts at 38.2%
Japan: 52.12%
United Kingdom: 40% for those making more than 50k
Kuwait
Sweden
Bahrain
Canada: 33%
United Arab Emirates
Denmark: 56%
Finland
Slovenia
Italy
Portugal
Cyprus
Spain
Iceland
I'm not listing all the countries, but you can see the tax rates here:
List of Countries by Personal Income Tax Rate
This page displays a table with actual values, consensus figures, forecasts, statistics and historical data charts for - List of Countries by Personal Income Tax Rate. List of Countries by Personal Income Tax Rate - provides a table with the latest tax rate figures for several countries...
Also keep in mind that most of these countries impose a Value Added Tax or a Goods & Service Tax which is way more than the average sales tax we pay in the US.
2) Getting money out of politics: I 100% agree with this and there are more dems than republicans that actually support this. However, getting money out of politics means supporting and voting for people that actually believe in this from a local, state, and federal level. That requires mobilization and consistent effort. Note a 1 time effort and - bam - it's over.
Also, getting rid of SuperPACs is impossible because of the Supreme Court case Citizens United. In other words, changing the Supreme Court composition requires a forced retirement or death of Republican justices (not practical) and having enough Dems in the Senate to vote for a more representative justice that could help overturn the Citizens United decision.
3) Higher wages: Agree, but the solution is above.
4) War in Ukraine: There's this issue called Geopolitics where getting out is easier said than done because the war impacts things such as gas prices, inflation, supply chains, etc. etc. etc. So when people complain why things are expensive, that is a major reason why. Ideally, I'd like to stay out of wars too, but it's not that easy.
5) Taxes: Curious to see what these exceptions are that you are referring to. Also, the solution to a simpler tax code is above.
