I can accept the reasonable argument that Biggie would not have risen to the same level of stardom without Puff's vision and marketing muscle behind him, but to say Big wouldnt have remained unknown and died penniless or whatever is just the kind of obnoxious hate threads we've come to expect around here.

There's a reason why Puff was so eager to start his own label after hearing big --- he knew he had a once in a lifetime talent on his hands that he could mold and shape and build an empire off of, and Biggie was largely a finished and polished product when Puff met him. Why are we still waiting for Puff to create another star with the type of love, respect, admiration, and popularity of a Biggie smalls since the mans death?
All jokes aside, you really don't know. The point that I'm trying to get across is that Big had to have somebody make his songs, Pac made his own joints.

Other than an average unknown rapper? Puffy had an education and experience in the record business and money. Big was a small time hustler eating sardines for dinner until he met Puff and Puff invented his whole style.

This is not a hate thread, im just trying to figure out where this guy really stands amongst the real legends
he wouldn't be popular as he is no.... only because biggie himself said he never wanted to do all those party singles and 80s covers... he hated that shyt

another label wouldn't have had him doin it.. and he might have been on the level of just another street rapper.. but his street raps would still be hard

she was obviously, along with other people in that video/movie, trying to make it seem like he was a "better person" than he actually was :comeon:. this is obvious. just like @Venem said, why do you think he'd go around telling his mom and others what he was doing? not to mention that it was stated several times that his mom barely even saw him during the days because of the jobs she was working so big would just ditch school everyday and do what he wanted with his homeboys. speaking of his homeboys, are we going to ignore the countless other people and his friends that have vouched for him and what he really did?

his mom also states that she didnt know what he was doing until much later after she heard from others and from the music he made

http://www.nytimes.com/1994/12/18/arts/pop-music-biggie-smalls-rap-s-man-of-the-moment.html

"(She says she only learned of her only child's drug dealing recently. "I found out about my son and his little antics through his music and through magazines," she said. "I read this thing and said, 'Huh? I never knew.' ")"

on the other hand however, someone else mightve been rappin or tellin ducktales....:youngsabo:

"Let me say for the record, I am not a gangster and never have been"

"Joining Death Row made Tupac a superstar, but it also brought out the worst in him. With Death Row acting like a gang itself, Tupac eagerly took to the role. The platinum rapper with a luxury apartment on Beverly Boulevard played the part of street-corner thug with relish. In photo sessions, he wore the red rag on his head, holding up 'B' gang handsigns. In his open-top Jaguar, Tupac would roll through the Piru and Leuders Park Blood neighbourhoods, proudly mixing with his people. Orlando became enmeshed in the politics of Blood and Crip because he grew up among them. Tupac became affiliated out of choice."

yeah but the point i was tryin' to make was that redman never got that cross over appeal. he got the respect among his peers and hip hop heads and the gold records (with the exception of doc's da name 2000 which went platinum) but he never really got that mainstream success

the redman comparison is telling because craig mack was basically a poor-man's redman.

yet, craig mack's run was arguably bigger than redman's peak.

puff is a genius.

puffis a marketing genius. just hearing how he helped sell jodeci, mary j, and then his work with mase is underrated. mase was going 4x platinum at his peak. salutes puff, had the best run in crossover hip hop outside of dre.

biggie was just a dope mc but we all know how many dope mc's there are out there. that aint even the half of what you need to blow up.
