I have a tempestuous relationship with the n word. I get pulled in both directions as to what is right; use it or step away. On one hand, I believe in the transformative power of words. To me, it is a representation of our people’s ability to take the worst blows and turn it into the best triumphs. It is a word that African Americans have always used. We have claimed it and given it a myriad of meanings.

On the other hand it is a weapon; the last word uttered from hateful lips before killing our ancestors. Today those who have no understanding of the implications of it use it like the word is nothing.

Like I said earlier, I’m still trying to figure it out. I haven’t yet heard or read the argument that convinced me that Black people should stop using the n word. I can also admit that I don’t want to let it go! I grew up using and hearing it. It’s apart of my vernacular and can mean so many different things depending on how and when it is said. That being said I’m willing to change my mind. But calling me lost and that’s it won’t change nothing

Great balanced post. Rep

Within private circles, I see no issue with Black people using that word as a term of endearment, in jest, etc...

What I don’t like is when Black people use that word, in any context within mixed company, then get mad when non-Blacks use it in public or in private spaces...

I hear what the OP is saying, but there are a few words that I think are worse which are the c-word, b-b word and b-w word! Can’t use those words as term of endearment with the exception of the c-word(ex., Ace Boon C-Word). Those words are meant to offend among other things, but at the end of the day, freedom of speech right?

We all gone die one day, I don't care

Though I would never use the word in mixed company like the above user says. I don't use it all around others races and never have. I'm actually more mindfully so it doesn't slip out.

And this coming from a representative of our community, lol:wow:. A person who has a chance to help others with his reach. These are the type of people they select for us. The type of people that have a voice in our community. And I’m pretty sure he’s older than me :mjcry:
