I have a tempestuous relationship with the n word. I get pulled in both directions as to what is right; use it or step away. On one hand, I believe in the transformative power of words. To me, it is a representation of our people’s ability to take the worst blows and turn it into the best triumphs. It is a word that African Americans have always used. We have claimed it and given it a myriad of meanings.
On the other hand it is a weapon; the last word uttered from hateful lips before killing our ancestors. Today those who have no understanding of the implications of it use it like the word is nothing.
Like I said earlier, I’m still trying to figure it out. I haven’t yet heard or read the argument that convinced me that Black people should stop using the n word. I can also admit that I don’t want to let it go! I grew up using and hearing it. It’s apart of my vernacular and can mean so many different things depending on how and when it is said. That being said I’m willing to change my mind. But calling me lost and that’s it won’t change nothing
