Im about to interview a breh who is asking for 120k a year salary

Show me the syntax difference between Java 8 iterating over a hashmap using lambda expressions as opposed to the old forloop way

Is this the kinda questions y'all ask? These are more digestible that the shyt you'd find in LeetCode, HackerRank or Cracking The Coding Interview.

Java 8 is the only Java version which supports functional programming right? What benefits does that have over previous OO type programming or whatever in your workplace? How does that improve your workflow?Because if you are just asking the breh syntax questions that have no relevance in the context of your workplace or have relevance but in the grand scheme of things aren't really critical in shipping whatever product you have, then your interview process is flawed and is more an exercise for you to show off the esoteric crap you know about Java rather than a real evaluation of the candidate's skill.

Plus 120K is not so out of the ordinary if you live in San Francisco / SV - the homie probably just needs to recalibrate his expectations. I'm also a recent grad and I can tell you right now that it burns me that some of my classmates got picked up by Google, Facebook, Apple for around 120-140K starting and then you got the others that went to Amazon for 80K. My starting salary barely touched any of those, so it can feel like a bit of an insult.

But I think every programmer should negotiate his or her salary because salaries are all over the place right now. You should try to maximize the amount of $$ you are getting for selling your employer your skills. So I can't hate on the breh even though his expectations were a little too high.

This nikka asking for 120k...and I know for a fact I will have to hold his hand for months to develop at our level...

Just a lil fyi brehs....i bring all this up because as of the hiring of the last "lead dev" that washed out after 3 months of work because he got exposed.....all new nikkas on our portfolio have to come through me because I warned management about dude that washed out after they hired him without my knowledge. It took me a week to see he was an impostor and they paid dude big boy $ for 3 months and he didnt do shyt....AND he had 10 years experience..

you do it all the time.....doing things that you do regularly makes things seem trivial after awhile

But is this something that the average java developer has to do regularly in writing everyday code or is this some corner case?

I dont even write java but I bet if I picked up a book I could find some obscure thing to trip you up on...would that invalidate you as a developer?

I mean it would be more prudent to interview him on the things that he would have to do in the actual job he is applying for

So he's not worth that salary just because he recently graduated? What's the range for the position? Does he have any other work experience? Yall really need to get the whole 6 figure thing out of your head. It's a number and if the industry your interviewing in is calling for that it's only right to ask for it. Why should you be underpaid just because you don't have a ton of experience?

That is something that can be easily done though using a Google search and Stack Overflow (literally seconds to do this). If I was in your position I'd prefer to ask questions that are more conceptual and hinge on a candidate fundamentally understandind certain concepts. Like multithreading for instance, or reflection. Focus more on the concepts and less on the syntax. Syntax is a waste of time. Like somebody said, you could have been a Java dev for 10 years but I bet I could find something about the language to trip you up on.

if the kid has a GitHub with open source code that's all the proof you need that he isn't some delusional shmuck and can actually write code. If he doesn't I'd go with a pair programming exercise for an intermediate to difficult task. (difficult cuz he asked for 120K starting salary).

I guess it depends on what percentage of budget you have that's something to brag about. I've worked for larger companies where the total budget for all projects was $80m, so that's less than 2% of the entire budget. You would have been under the radar.

Why are you even granting this kid an interview? Here I am trying to put great things on my GitHub sacrificing my evenings and weekends, no life, memorizing random CS crap just to hit 80K (maybe) in the next couple of years and this kid just thinks 120K is going to be handed to him on a platter?

You have to air that kid out proper and make him adjust his expectations big time. You don't ask for that kind of salary unless you really are on top of your game and without a GitHub or garnering any sort of reputation online as a rockstar dev the kid is playing himself.
