i am not a certs champ but why don't you do some of the cloud certs? aws, google, azure? you'll gain additional networking as part of that.

From my own research networking is the foundation of cloud so I went for a full dive in the net+. however not before watching all of Jeremy theory and labs and realizing the CCNA simply would require more time, and in realization went back to the net+ because it seemed easier to get for a resume addition to break into those more networking inclined roles to eventually go from Network engineer/admin roles to Cloud Architect roles.

What do y’all think of WGU’s BS in Information Technology as a starting point? I’m thinking about going into cloud or cybersecurity and am open to getting certs that are not included in the degree.

I'm currently at WGU. A couple of classes from obtaining my BS in Information Technology.


WGU is tailored for people who already have IT experience I wish I've known that before enrolling. In other words having a degree is cool, but nowadays experience is king.

Also WGU being an online school the networking connections sucks compared to a traditional brick and mortar institution

I don’t hold any certifications, but I have a Bachelor’s in Computer Information Systems and currently manage Active Directory, Exchange, and the proxy infrastructure that supports our hybrid environment with Entra and Exchange Online. To a lesser extent also support identity governance through Saviynt. Everything I’ve learned has been through hands-on experience, not from any CompTIA material — and frankly, most certs wouldn’t have taught me what I do daily.

Imo, a degree opens more doors than certifications, not because it teaches more, but because it gets your foot in the door. I’m currently earning well over $120K doing this work, and I can confidently say that networking and knowing how to present yourself should be everyone’s top priority in this field.

I agree. Currently don't have any certs but a IT security engineer with a bachelors. I know I'll need to get some to pad the resume, but hands on experience is king in this field.

Depends on the major, but for the IT program 3700 or 3800 a term

I didn't have to pay out of pocket. I'm using the GI Bill to cover the cost

Tbh if you get the Net+ now, you'll end up paying for the CCNA eventually as well. Might as well go straight for it.

My term starts on Oct 1 for the MS ITM program. I have the experience so I'm mainly knocking this out while I have the flexibility working remote.

Almost halfway thru the AWS Solution Architect class on Udemy. The material is not hard but these questions at the end are killing me. It doesn't help that I'm trying to power thru the videos and the console so half to the material is going in and out of my head. I should be done by early October and I should be able to take the exam by either later in the month or in November.

For anyone who took and pass the SAA test, did it help you with getting a cloud job afterwards?
