He's a nice dude in real life. Met him several times on the humble.
Let your boss tell you "you're a good BLACK employee" are you ok with that?

I'm not an actor but I'm an artist. I'll tell you why.Like I get it. He wants to transcend the label because people use that to diminish his product.

Yall thespians, musicians, and writers trip me out...only time we see yall use the word 'art' is when yall tryna sound articulate.I'm not an actor but I'm an artist. I'll tell you why.
Because people have decided because of the color of my skin that my art isn't on par. So they label me a black artist. It's like self type casting that limits the type of work you can and things you wish to communicate. Are white artists called white artists by the mainstream or are they simply labeled artists?
If I make art to express my humanity beyond the confines of my skin is it not dehumanizing when someone labels me a black artist? If you identify as a black artist you will be pigeonholed and receive only those type of roles that speak on race. You won't be able to transcend and make stuff that speaks to more than that.
It's not that we view black as lesser. It's that other people automatically categorized black art as lesser and are categorizing us as black artists automatically. It is a statement that says,"you are inferior." When I introduced myself at an art community thing the other week they didn't take me seriously. Why? I'm black. They talked down to me despite me receiving fellowships from renown orgs and institutions. Then when they saw my shyt? Oh, this is good.
This is why you don't categorize yourself as a black artist. It's a form of self censure and only a non artist wouldn't get it.
I'm a photographer and definitely use the word artist. The place I was at? An art gallery. I was asking how I could qualify for an art exhibit.Yall thespians, musicians, and writers trip me out...only time we see yall use the word 'art' is when yall tryna sound articulate.
