I grew up in the Harlem in the 80s. The worst project was Polo grounds on 155. I lived across the street in Rangel houses. Them polo dudes was always taxing nicca for whatever kicks hats jewelry and in 89 it was bubble coats cause the northface came out. My homie got juxed for the knock off a wind chill factor. I was :russ: when he showed up with just the The rugby on in the middle of Feb. In 90 I got a lil money and had a lite chain wit the bull head pendant. My homeboy Steve from Manhattanville pjs came to check me literally wit the dooky slick Rick level jewels. He wanted to holla at a cute shorty from my buildings. Long story short we got confronted by like 30 dudes from polo grounds with they hoodies tied up to they eyes on some ninja shyt. Even with the faces covered I recognized them cause we grew up together. Steve face was on some
 and jetted on some Olympics ish
. They was like run ya chain. I popped it off and was like nahh. These fools tried to jump me for it but they was feeble as f@ck. I start scraping and caught on of them by the hoodie. The old heads seen me going for mines and backed most of them down on some let the fight the one on one. I bash this nicca had into every multi color cement toy they had in the play ground. They saw I was getting the better of they man's and tried jump me again. The old heads blocked me off and escort me home. I lost one of my Reebok in the scuffle. And held the chain so hard the pendant cut my hand bad. A month later I saw this bad ass stick up kid on the train and he told his man "That's the kid that gave me stitches." I been on some b.s. ever since. :manny:

I know it aint meant to be a punchline, but it has me :laff:

My G, London's BEEN like that.

Grew up in Theath, but have family in Burnt Oak and North.
Always kept a girl 'off the ends' cos it's easier to creep. :manny:

CR7's been like that since the 90's.
Down south heads will most likely test you on the bus, rather then on foot. (less escapes).

In my era we had the glass Lucozade bottles as weapon, the buses red 'glass-shatter' hammers or my favourite a metal rule from DT.
Ducking Brixton heads, 28's, younger 28's or Peckham boys.

You surviving off 'facial recognition' rather then rep. That or playing dumb humming to yourself into the distance like a psycho when those wolves got on. :demonic:

:ohlawd: The memories.

Those hammers from coaches use to go missing when we went to games or play football vs other schools. Rounders bats use to missing all the time as well, as they were handy up the sleeve weapons.

Nikkas actin like that shyt aint true.....poor life choices always impact your kids....and the cycle continues
Only reason I even spent that long in the jects is because my hood(Carver projects, east Harlem) got cleaned up early so there was no immediate need to leave and my mother spent her money on buying a big ass crib in DR & eventually stacked enough for a downpayment on an uptown apartment that's now worth close to 3/4 million....and she did this while working a regular job and supporting the family, it's difficult for me to empathize with ppl who act like social mobility in this country isn't simply a matter of working hard and being smart with your money.

You are looking at things so simple minded!

Your mother made it in this country when most people were able to come up if they had a goal, money went farther, and she got lucky because the value of property went up substantially. That rarely happens, so she basically hit the lottery. Plus, she spent her money on a home in a poor country, so the money went far, if you are from this country, the only place to do that is in the south, or midwest, a family friend did it. He bought a whole bunch of land in S.C. after selling one of his Brownstones in Brooklyn which he got when NYC was bad, and he got it for cheap!

The difference is our generation(45-under), and future generation, are not getting these opportunities to move up, regardless of race. There are reports about this all over the place, but you are living through your mother who is an older person, they hold most of the wealth in this country, especially when it comes to minorities like us! Most people are living off of credit, very few actually own anything.

It's sad that you still hold beliefs that are long gone, and the truth is right in your face with President Trump passing the new tax codes! As a Dominican you should be more knowledgeable, as they are the poorest latins in NYC, along with P.R.'s. If you plan to stay in NYC, you better hope your mother leaves, so that money can stretch, and she can lend you some, because its gonna get worse, before it gets better the next few years.

on everything this happened to one of my guys when we were in highschool.

He had just got a new Avirex leather (this was the late 90s when everyone wanted one.)

He was walking to work when he walked past this cat sitting on a stoop.

Dude asked my friend "ayo what size is that coat?" :demonic:

Now...you should already know what time it is when someone ask you that :mjcry:

My guy was a hard head and thought he was tough...so he yelled back "man Joe, fuk you asking me that for!? :childplease:"

Ol boy sitting on the stoop got up off the stairs and walked onto the side walk and just start letting off shots....
...my guy started running as soon as he seen dude get up.

Luckily he didnt get shot...but when he got to work he had bullet holes in his coat...shyt just missed him :picard:

Had the same type of thing happen to this dude I know who didnt want to let someone bum a cigarette.
Got his car shot the fuk up because he told dude no w/ an attitude.

Them fools would rob any thing moving including people living there.
Facts bro. Red Hook to me is like Far Rock and Staten Island to me. Them places that are mad far from shyt...stay away from. There ain’t no quick exit.

fam this isnt true.

Its easier to make money now than it ever has been.

You dont need money or college to start a business or a side hustle anymore.
People just arent paying attention.

I had family that lived in the projects...they werent there because of society...they were there because of bad habits.
Same goes for everyone else I know that lived in the projects.

If you're broke in 2018...its because you just arent trying.
There are just too many ways to make money. You almost have to not be trying.

Harlem via Brooklyn

I grew up in Brooklyn in the 90s. It didn't matter what hood you were in, shyt was mad stressful. I remember going to a house party one time in East Flatbush. Minding my business with the homeys and some dudes were up on a porch chilling in the cut. Mind you, this wasn't the Jects or anything... Regular ole one family houses on a tree-lined street. We blazing drinking and one of the dudes yell, don't screw face and pelts a bottle at us. We rush to open the gate and all them cats draw. Fam, a man next to me start to bawl tears talking about we all black brothers, why we gotta do this to each other. Man, I froze and stood still but they were like keep moving and don't start any ish. Man, I had my eyes peeled in that party like ole boy from Get Out the entire evening we were in there.

Don't even get me started about the times I used to date girls that lived in Boulevard Houses and Cypress in the late 90s and dudes on the A train pressing hard because they knew I wasn't from out there. Dudes from out there used to dress in Fatigues and timbs and im out there in some Polo and Nautica and Js.

My people are so lost, and its us that's keeping us sleep!

No one said you can't make money now, I said owning shyt, and moving upwardly, most of us are living off of credit! Things cost more now, so even though you get money, most of it is going to bills, and food. If you want proper healthcare, there goes even more money. If you have student loans, there goes your money. If you have children, there goes your money. If you want to enjoy yourself, there goes even more money. No one is saying you can't live, but you shouldn't be working like a slave in the WORLDS RICHEST COUNTRY, JUST TO LIVE A MODEST LIFE!

You act like this is me just talking, its been going towards this trend for years, it didn't just start. Its even worse for blacks, even if you have college degree, and no baby boomer parents to help you. For whites, a lot of them gained their wealth from the government giving out loans for them to buy houses in the 1950's, and didn't allow blacks to get them or live where whites lived in the suburbs, so most whites have wealth from their parents, and grandparents, they use their houses to get more wealth. Most of us can't do that, especially after the housing crisis. This article shows how whites stay wealthy through inheritance, blacks don't have that gift because we came from slavery, and Jim Crow, racism is systemic not how someone feels about you.
https://money.usnews.com/investing/...nnials-be-ready-for-the-great-wealth-transfer
"Will Millennials Be Ready for the Great Wealth Transfer?
They're set to inherit record wealth, with opportunities and challenges for them and financial advisors.
"That's reinforced by AARP statistics, which show that people older than 50 hold 80 percent of America's household wealth."

Advisors are preparing young clients for the $30 trillion (with a T) transfer of wealth

I thought you study economics, and how money works. I don't have these issues, but I would be a fool to think everyone is like me. Here's some articles just in case you don't know:
Harder for Americans to Rise From Lower Rungs
Poor at 20, Poor for Life
Moving up the economic ladder is even harder than we thought
It's getting harder for kids to move up the economic ladder. He's got ideas how to fix that.
It's harder for everyone to go up in the world
