Well, this is JJ Reddikk talking about old basketball players, so I guess I'll jump off with some wild shyt, as is the nature of a Reddikk comparison:

Larry Bird was basically Voshon Lenard with a melanin deficiency, if you really look at it. Couldn't hang with today's players in today's game.

JJ is right but his rationale is all wrong so it’s hard to support his stance. I don’t think Bird is a top 3 3 point shooter off all time but basing it solely on percentages and volume with zero context is pretty illogical imo

jj is wrong. u give Bird more attempts and tell him "u need to shoot more" he's gonna excel at it because Bird excelled at every aspect of the game.
I believe this too, but we'll never know that, or at least not until we have a scientific way to look into the alternate universe where the NBA and NCAA instituted the three-point line fifteen years earlier than they did in our universe.

I despise everything about this era of bball. Lebron James could have 100k points and I'm not putting him over MJ. That being said, Wardell Curry is the greatest shooter Iver ever seen. Probably wouldn't have survived the 80s and 90s tho
I think Curry in the 80s and 90s would depend on if the coach gives him the greenlight. Shots he shoot today would easily be considered bad, but he makes A LOT of them

There's no way for anyone to say it wouldn't have happened... :manny:
Right, I agree. We'll never know either way. All we have are the numbers, which show that Reddikk is technically correct, but put into context, it's a pointless question. If Larry Bird started balling professionally in 2016, the answer would probably be different.

The reason why Bird won those 3-pt contests are because the objective was to have more made threes than the others.

And that's the story of Larry Bird. i need to score here... i'll score. i need to get others involved... let me do that. i need to play defense here and get a steal... let me get that. i need 15 rebounds today... no problem.

That's Larry Bird. u tell him "practice more threes because from now on u are shooting 10 per game.. " what's Larry gonna do? ... Exactly that.

Also.. JJ wouldn't be allowed to guard Bird because he's a soft cac.. Bird would drop 60 to prove a point

Your point is basically why I'm mostly disinterested in G.O.A.T. discussions. At the end of the day, anyone at that level or in that discussion is able to do whatever they need to do to win. Hit threes, facilitate, get stops, whatever.

I've gotten to the point where when someone gives their top five or ten or whatever, I'm pretty much fine with it since at the end of the day, that level of talent is so good, they're only separated by stuff they can't completely control (rings, injuries).

Larry probably is a better 3pt shooter than the percentages show. They barely took 3s and even he didn't have a green light to take them. Seems like he generally took them in situations where he was either wide open or they needed them. I don't think you can judge him in the modern context.
if players back then didn't shoot nearly as many three as they do now, then the percentages should be higher cuz teams don't defend the 3 like they do now.

i mean look at this

mad dog is a dumbass. steph doesnt "live at the line". it's notorious that steph doesnt get a good whistle. he shoots 4 FT's a game

Mad dog is doing that tired ass routine of "the game was so much better in the 80s than it is now". :unimpressed:
