A big reason why is he was playing 44-46 minutes a night in the playoffs, playing back 2 back games in a much tougher and more physical era. It makes sense. His legs are dead. That is nothing like someone who is wide open and not even being guarded. It's "open" by modern NBA standards, but it's nothing by 1980s standards when they weren't even challenging those shots. Not to mention those standards are mostly relevant to 2pt shots, not 3pt shots where you need more time and a flatter trajectory to get off your shot.


And of course he barely takes any threes with someone "0-2 feet away". No one has taken many threes like that in any era - in most cases you can't even get the shot off unless you're much taller than your defender or take it with crazy elevation. Bird probably doesn't have 10 regular season threes under that sort of defensive pressure for his entire career.
