So Wale didn't have that single with lady gaga that popped up off? Kai is the same age as my younger cousins and they all know who Wale is. I'm not saying they were bumping to his music but they recognize the name/artist. I don't believe Kai for a second
I'm not saying I believe him 100% either but Wale wasn't popping enough to say one way or another especially if he didn't even grow up listening to rap like that. I have and I couldn't tell you any lyrics off that Lady Gaga song right now.

Another thing to consider with Wale is that his biggest songs all have featured appearances for the hooks that are the highlights of the song.

I'd say his most recognizable verse that people tend to be able to repeat a fair amount of is his No Hands verse from ages ago. All his other hits are with R&B singers and while the songs are big, most people will recite the hook and not be able to really tell you what Wale said in the verses

Wale wasn't some huge rap star

Dude never went platinum
He was going gold before they counted streams and records sales at that time was at a all time low that was like being platinum and he got a bunch of platinum singles

This is low-key a bar...

It was very easy to know who a big rapper was in the late 90s/early 00s because we didn't have social media. We had BET, MTV and the radio.

The stars would do their press runs on The Basement and 106 & Park. Their videos would be on TV, that was our exposure and awareness.

Much easier putting a face to the music. Now the listener has to seek that out on their own. You have to pull up YouTube and search for the video. I'm sure a lot of people just hear songs on auto play now and have no idea who these people are or what they look like
Don’t that kinda contradict the streaming era though? Like Apple will feed my playlist with and and every rapper out here. Thank God for Yo mtv raps and rap city back in the day because I probably wouldn’t know most of the rappers I know without it. 106 and park also put people up on artists. People say tv and radio are dead.. well that’s how we got to know artists. It should be way easier now since there’s way more outlets to expose us to these artists.

Music reactions are just 1 of the many things he streams, that's not his main thing.

Theoretically it is easier to discover artists because we have the freedom to do so and we have every album available to listen to for $9.99 a month.

But with that new way of consumption comes the influx of music that gets uploaded to DSPs so it's an ocean of content out there. Before streaming the structure in place was easier to promote who the stars were. Now, it feels like if an artist isn't already established, they damn near have to go viral to even cut through all the other noise that they are competing with our attention for. Our media consumption habits have really changed, so that's why I actually think it's harder today to really get noticed because there isn't a straight cut pathway to getting your music heard anymore.

Only certain artists are known across generations like that. I like Wale but he was never THAT big. You have to really put in effort to know the non Icons from before your time. I had no choice but to know Al Green, Aretha, The Ojays... acts on that level. I had to do research to know who Billy Paul was. I knew Charlie Wilson's voice and some hits but I didnt know who he was until Last Name Wilson. I legit thought Angela Winbush was a new artist in the 90s. I literally just learned the name of Strawberry Letter 23 and that its by The Brothers Johnson and I am an old school head.
