Ya'll gotta remember (youngins) back in the 90s and early 2000s it was hard af to actually become a commercial artists. Not a big fan of Soulja Boy, but the dude really changed the game as far as rappers making bread online without a label backing. Studio prices used to be crazy (like $500 an hour shyt) and all kind of crazy shyt. So yeah, rappers signed bullshyt deals to win by any means necessary. It wasn't right, but that's how it was. Nobody could've forseen the diy online rap superstar becoming an alternative because it didn't exist.

Nah "The Term" is defined in the contract (hence the capitalization). The issue is that The Term is either ambiguous and/or it's virtually impossible to fulfill the Term based on the metrics. Either way, his lawyer should have caught that, unless his lawyer was also working for the record label in a clear conflict of interest lol. There is no way I am selling Kanye his publishing back for 5 mil though. They just threw that number out to him thinking he didn't have the cash. Then he produces the cash and they fronted. Cold game.

His lawyer probly did catch it and thought nothing of it because it's just 3 years. Which is not long or hard to do without retiring unless you are some kind of special. Idk why everyone so quick to talk shyt about lawyers without knowing the legalities

I deal with this sort of nonsense in Non Solicitation agreements every time I switch jobs (Tech Sales).

These companies write these crazy overly broad agreements which basically try to tell me that I cant perform a similar service, anywhere in the world, for at least one year with any company of any size if it somehow touches what 'they' deem the 'same industry'.

They basically to to get you to sign up to flip burgers for at least a year if you ever decide to leave them. Ive seen dudes sued over this shyt and get judgments against them that ruined their lives....and this is for some jobs you might only make $40k base salary, lmao.

This one company I worked at sued this dude that left and went to a competitor, and he was like 28 and just recently married, making maybe $55k a year.....and they got a judgment against him where he had his fukking waged garnished to the tune of $200 a month for 20 years!!!!! for 'damages' to the companies 'Intellectual property'.

shyt like this is why I scoff at the idea of 'trickle down economics'. Its never in a big ass companies best interest to 'create jobs', its to make and protect earnings at all costs.

These musicians are trying like hell to get put on and these company's take advantage of them any chance they get.
Case in point, the tax cuts. Big autos laid off workers and did stock buybacks AFTER the tax cuts.

It’s not the same. Wayne doesn’t earn as much as Kanye. Wheezy on a lifetime contract would mean that people were still checking for him like that.

No hate against Wayne. My man was the hottest out for a minute from the mixtape era to 09. Once he went to jail, he came out washed. The game passed him up. 2019, Kanye will drop a project and most people, hate him or not are checking for it. Sold out tours, new fashion and all the hype that comes leading up to and behind a Kanye brand release.

With that type of fame, the price is always your soul.

Kanye is literally in a slave deal.
What do you mean it's not the same?

Wayne's last album sold considerably more than Kanye last album by the way.

I know it’s fun to laugh at Kanye now but in context, this is waaaaaaay back before Kanye became the cultural icon he is now. When he signed this, only dame had any faith in him as an artist and no one knew he would become who he would become. Jay went through similar things when trying to get a deal for reasonable doubt until priority gave him a shot. Nas signed a 10 album deal where he himself said: I’m columbia record slave/ so get paid. Even jadakiss: you wonder I invest in the haze and in the dope/ cuz currently I’m a slave for interscope

I’m just putting shyt in perspective.

Erm, not quite homie

Atv has been around since the 50s. Mj bought atv in 85 after outbiding Paul McCartney and others. In 95 he sold half to Sony, which created sony/atv.
And then he died and his estate sold it back.

Coincidentally I'm reading this while a Kanye inspired of the Cleveland show is playing. All he needs to do is get him an intern to be Kanye.

I doubt that bro. Unless said lawyer didn't specialize in contracts....particularly music contracts. Something's not adding up. Do you know who his lawyer was at the time?

and thats exactly why music was better back than, you had to be good to get signed to a label and get expensive studio time (few exceptions obviously), fukk soulja boy hes directly/indirectly responsible for the trash music we got now (again a few exceptions here and there)
