I like this a lot, as much as TPAB, with that being said it is nowhere near as good as tpab... tpab features some of the absolute best funk & jazz elements of the decade

its crazy when you think about it.. the best jazz artist of the 2010s is kamasi washington and even he admitted his best work was featured on Kendrick's to pimp a butterfly :ohhh:

Kendrick really has the right artists behind him atm

and herbie hancock said he wants to work with ALL the musicians who worked on TPAB :wow:

When was the last time a hip hop album transcended the genre like that? MBDTF?

As amazing as TPAB is musically, you also have to give props to the musicians who worked on this shyt. Keep in mind that a lot of these aesthetic choices were made by session musicians (legends and super acclaimed musicians), not Kendrick himself.

I guess Kendrick had the vision for the whole thing, ala Kanye West

true, but I read somewhere that kendrick was heavily involved in the making process of the production, was telling the musicians what to do, etc

great review from ziggiy

I think you should have given this a 6/5 instead of a 5/5 though

TPAB was wack and forced and overrated but this one is better

shyts just raw

this is probably closer to what kendrick was going for originally but the label pushed all that fake pro black aspect too hard

1) it wasn't experimental

2) there's a reason if its praised as one of the best albums ever...

Do you even music? do you know the difference between free jazz and fusion jazz? do you know what a blue note is? do you know anything about Bebop scales or Altered scales, syncopation and polyrhythms, shifting keys??

Tpab being praised by smart people with serious musical knowledge or musicians or critics as one of the best composed albums have nothing to do with it being "experimental" because it wasn't, its because the music was objectively on GOAT level
:stopitslime:

Think of all the universal classics in hip hop. Illmatic, Rwasonable Doubt, All Eyez on Me, Ready To Die, Only Buolt for Cuban Linx, Doggystle, The Chronic etc. shyt even the freest albums of the 2000s and 2010s including The Blueprint, Stillmatic, College Dropout, The Documentary, Get Rich or Die Trying, Food and Liquor, MBDTF to GKMC.

You ever hear anyone need to defend these albums based off the bullshyt you just spewed? No, of course not... because the music spoke for itself; not some hipster faux intellect dissecting "scales, polyrhythms, and shifting keys". Call a spade a spade.... shyt was underwhelming, he tried too hard just like you're trying to hard with this hilarious response.

Tpab is a genius piece of music, even if you disagree. The music speaks for itself and it deserves every bit of praise
Word.

Tpab could have been a great album like gkmc if it was straight hip hop, but it became a true masterpiece as soon as they incorporated all the absolute best ideas black musicians have helped to pioneer over the past 100 years.
