This dude says the dumbest shyt ever
He’s not wrong though.

If you’ve ever tried to move up in any corporate structure, a big part of it is you being married. When people are investing all they can in you, it makes a big difference, because you being married with kids signifies a certain level of maturity plus you have more to lose (I.e. you’re easier to control). Being the face of a league means selling to middle America.

He’s not correct. As SAS pointed out, Jordan was already the face of the league by the time he married Juanita. Perk just an idiot and a c00n.

MJ wasn't the only face in 1989, Magic and Bird were still doing their thing.

MJ took over the league frfr as the sole face in the 90s.

I agree and disagree but the biggest grievance for me on why there is no “face” of the league amongst young cats is most don’t have a charm/charisma to them
Everybody he listed had a “IT” factor
SGA ain’t got it
Hali ain’t got it
Ant aint got it
Book ain’t got it
And so on
Yeah they have a nice game but it’s not something that translates off the court
Steph showed little kids and short nikkas they could make it
Lebron is Ironman status
KD even with his temper just has that pure shot
Mikes charm was through the fukking roof in the 90s
Same for Magic, he looked like you could just have a good convo
Bird was :mjpls: for certain fans but his game was just too hard to write him off
Hell even Barkley and his campaign of not being a role model had people like:ehh:
AI/Rodman were faces of the NBA as much as they tried not to make them
Them nikkas was just rockstars at one point
As a player you just have to have that uncanny gravitas that nobody can replicate
These kids just don’t have that and I don’t think they ever will
And this not coming from a hating old nikka
I just don’t see it with the current crop of players:manny:

That's really for the kids coming up to determine. Most of the people you named were grown when we were kids. In 25 years they will be talking about some of the current players like that.

I would say that too, but thats another thing.....this generation isn't even stanning on the level of our generations. None of these Gen Z's will care about Ant or Ja as much as we care about MJ, Kobe, Bron, Steph. They got YT celebrities and all types of other shyt going on.
This.

Our media in our formative years was tiny and controlled. We had magazines, VHS tapes, and National games to go off of only. Our media was limited and we played outside and tried to emulate our stars. We got into heated arguments about our players.
:gladbron:
Nowadays, everybody is in their phone and have everything on demand. We can’t even watch a full quarter without looking on instagram or SM.
:francis:
Imagine the fried brains that are under us. They don’t care about Ant. He’s cool but they are trying to be like him. They may look at his highlights. Catch all the vital dunks but that’s it.
:manny:
Like a few posters already said, this crop of 22-27 year olds aren’t it. Real hoop heads don’t care. We will watch regardless. 1-3 million people regular season games. 5-8 million watch playoff games. Casuals catch a few games or are into the playoffs. They are trying to figure out who Halliburton is and why is his dad being brought up.

Don't get me wrong, being married takes you to the top of any industry and I advocate for it. You'd be hard pressed to find anyone at the top of anything that isn't married, even if it's not faithfully.

I just figured Ant could be on that Jordan path without the marriage. I feel like the league and media would love to annoint him with or without a solid partner on his arm. He just needs to stop having mad kids and getting into messy shyt with the BMs publically...

Sidebar, Jordan definitely does look like a sitcom dad here. In shape Carl Winslow ass nugga...
KD is about as popular as an ummarried childless man can get in the NBA

That’s because AIDS was huge in the 90s. Magic was whoring and drugging since the 80s, blatantly, ostentatiously. No one cared. He was an athlete and people only gave a damn about the game back then. Personally, they could do whatever they wanted. Long as you don’t catch a case, people missed the business about them.

And you think your average person in Kansas knew about all that whoring and drugging he was doing and just didn't care?

My argument is the average nba fan wasn't fed that info about him. And if they were people would probably care about that. Especially coming off all that Regan drug war stuff

Pointing out their transgressions doesn't mean shyt. They were all still family men and Kendrick is correct. A good football example for a younger player would be Jalen Hurts.
Yeah we definitely doing want to start doing that because there’s not too many perfect people out here. Folk will post shyt like that then try to tell me Chris Brown is dope. People have to stop doing that dumb shyt smh.. I mean shyt should be out the window with who was elected to be our president and all lol

That was less about Magic and Bird at that point than it was Lakers and Celtics. He was already anointed by bytch Magic and Bird as the best basketball player in the league and was the most marketable already. That is a solidly planted flag as the face of the league.

Would and did are two different things my boy. Thread isn’t about changing history. It’s about comparing it.

And even with KD, he hasn't been outside on some public playboy shyt. He's just been low key doing his thing, and I think he explained already why he doesnt want to get married. The way a guy like Ant is carrying on, it doesn't help.

Hip hop was big and new with some of the stars we grew up with and it was a different era of black appreciation. Now that is not the case.

There was a level of aggression to be great.
There still is, but the current game doesn't cater to cultivating that aggression In the players. Defense has been pushed into the background. Opponents did not really like each other back in the day like that. They were opponents. Today is different and they are being paid too much to hate like that. That level of I'm going to dominate you because I need to get paid is not there anymore.

the best or most successful player is usually the face of the league. Nobody gives a shyt about these nikkas wives

:patrice: I don't know about that
Face of the league isn't marketed to housewives
That’s exactly who the face of the league is. Hardcore hoop fans will watch or engage and know the players, no matter how much they bytch and complain. The face of the league is the one you don’t need to know basketball at all to know, because their reach is beyond basketball.

But regardless the shyt is a moot point. That “face of the league shyt” is a talking point that’s not affecting the day to day. The talking heads just need something or somebody to tear down. The same nikkas who try to make Ant the face are the same ones asking if he was pushed too early. Instead of worrying about the game because they can’t actually talk about the game at a high enough level, and the ones who do don’t have a big enough platform to actually teach the game to a broader audience. That’s the real problem today, and probably tomorrow
