The ratings are just a glimpse of the bigger issues with the NBA, NHL, MLB. The products just aren't as interesting and they've tried a bunch already and some of them (NBA) have damaged their product chasing after viewers. MLB's tried to speed games up but they still drag on, NHL is largely irrelevant no matter what, and NBA has completely killed defense and wants 130-145 scores every night, since they are convinced casuals want higher scores. NFL's done some things with defenses too but the diehards and casuals can still get together in the middle.
Then you have Player X wanting out every year in the NBA and the drama that comes with the nonstop reporting on that. A lot of people watch sports to get away and take a break for a few hours, if they want drama there's plenty in their lives. The drama people actually want in sports is that Brady comeback and KC's OT win, so it's no surprise the ratings are what they are and why NFL will keep blowing the other sports out the water.
