James Nichols, Luis Valenzuela: Veteran LAPD cops raped women while on duty?

Two officers were accused of pressuring women into having sex in exchange for leniency. The officers, James Nichols and Luis Valenzuela, have been ordered to appear at disciplinary hearings, to determine their future.

James Nichols and his partner, Luis Valenzuela – both veteran officers with the LAPD – were arrested Wednesday and charged with a host of sexual crimes, including rape and sexual battery. The 18-count criminal complaint alleges that Nichols, 44, and Valenzuela, 43, committed the majority of their crimes while on duty. The men face life in prison if found guilty.

Reports CNN on Feb. 17: “Two Los Angeles police officers who once worked as partners patrolling the streets of Hollywood have been charged with sexually assaulting four women they encountered while on duty, prosecutors announced Wednesday.”

The alleged assaults occurred in 2008, and again in 2011. The victims of the LAPD officers were ages 19, 24, 25 and 34 at the time. All were women busted by the two officers on drug related charges. At least one of the women had her charges dropped in return for becoming a street informant. Except when she was unable or unwilling to provide the LAPD with tips, she was allegedly forced into committing sex acts on the men.

The criminal complaint asserts Nichols and Valenzuela forcibly raped women in the back of their squad car and elsewhere. Some were sexually abused under the threat of arrest or deportation, reports Reuters news service. Other offenses include “sexual battery” and “forcible oral copulation.” One victim says she was forced to have sex with one of the officers while “at gunpoint.”

“These two officers have disgraced themselves. They've disgraced this badge. They've disgraced this office,” commented Los Angeles Police Department Chief Charlie Beck. “Any officer that abuses the public's trust is not welcome in the LAPD and we will continue vigorously investigating officers accused of alleged crimes and cooperate fully with the district attorney's office.”

Prosecutors are requesting that bail for the two men be set around $4 million dollars each. Nichols and Valenzuela will be arraigned on Thursday.
