From a female perspective, I assume they react negatively because the man isn't supposed to notice any flaws.

You're supposed to be saying "all your curves and all your edges, all your perfect imperfections". If you say you don't like something about her matter of factly then that would probably hurt. Then some people get defensive when they get hurt, then the fight etc etc

Imagine if your wife/girlfriend looked at you without your shirt on and matter of factly said "you should go to the gym". It stings no matter who does it

what i've noticed is that women in general(not all, but most). can take all the corrective critique you have to offer them when yall are just friends. the moment yall get into a relationship. the same stuff you usually say wont fly anymore. she aint having it. now some may say " you can tell me things that will help me" the the honest truth is. sure i could but i have to find such a soft way to say it i darn near cant say it. i mean basically you have to talk to your GF or wife like you are her grandmother/grandfather. you know how they are, "babbbby, well now you know what you've been doing over this might not be the best thing to do. but i'm going to let you decide cause i know you're grown now. ya know i love you any how baby."
