I gotta stop ever giving an opinion on music based on first listen. Plus no more late night listening sessions for Grandpa

Listening to this the second time when I'm fresh and sober and this is very, very dope.

Preemo, my apologies.

I stayed up til midnight, was listening to the album after taking my arthritis medication.... i should've waited til this morning :snoop:

But Nas is killing this shyt. It’s still in the upper half of his catalogue

This right here.

This is a Top 4 Nas album, for me. Like I said last week. And there's no day one Nas fan, who's more critical of his catalogue, than I am. Most of the people who I see complaining about things on the album, are the people the album wasn't made for. It's casuals.

There was literally someone in this thread, saying he hopes the project has a "good amount of hi-hat's". Anybody waiting on a damn Nas and Premier album, and thinking about hi-hat's ain't no day one fan, and is the kinda listener that isn't from where we're from. I'll put it like that, lol. Too many posers speaking on music that's being made for real heads.

Listening again while eating lunch and I think I only dislike a few beats outright with the rest being decent to great

- Welcome to the Underground just ain't it. It's missing something, Large Professor does this classic rock sound much better

- Pause Tapes is simple but gets a pass because how dope the record is and the concept. Possibly my favorite Nas track in a while, but the beat alone is weak but maybe that's the concept. Funny how that works out...

- Bouquet also gets a pass because this is a dope tribute and the sample is nice. Supa Dave West flipped it better for He Comes (De La & Ghost) though

***

And that's really it in terms of my qualms with the beats. The rest is solid. Nothing is seeing their records from 94-99, nothing on here is on that level, but that's fine to me

I'm not sure what his setup is these days, but the beats lack the dirt of yesteryear. Everything feels polished and the drums aren't snappy like they used to be. But that's just age to me. The essence is still there. I like these beats and it feels true to DJ Premier's sound without feeling like he's chasing anything

I wanted at least one objective anthem that you can play for anyone (like Nas Is Like) and this project doesn't have that IMO but I'm not disappointed at all. This is a great album

This album must be played loud, preferably in a system or the car. I've listened to it 4 times today. Solid 7.5/10

Premier always says that he doesn't make music for computer or phone speakers.

He said when you throw this on, listen on a real system or in the car. That's a must.

Listening to these simple, minimal, beats makes me appreciate the soul samples and the beat switches on the Hit-Boy albums that much more.

Magic 1 and 3 and KD2 and KD3 are better than this.

Gonna go rock 'Japanese Soul Bar' and "Im on Fire" right now, that's the vibe I need
