The only people that make money based on ‘likes’ or follower counts are celebrities like Nicki who will advertise a product, and some of them don’t even put #ad and pretend they actually use the product. Like laxative tea & girdles.

This is not how it works. the number of likes on a picture is the worst metric to use when determining if an influencer is worth paying to promote. Likes do not translate into sales.

Likes are typically indicative of reach (although likes per impressions vary with content quality). Reach does translate into sales. If you can drive likes, you will drive reach, since Instagram's algorithm takes likes into account hidden or not.

Obviously they aren't the only metric and work in combination with the other ones like shares, followers, etc. They all feed into the overall engagement rate, which is something that does matter if you're looking for someone to promote your brand.

That being said, Nicki Minaj is whining for no reason and needs to get over it.

She's right, but I don't see the removal holding. Instagram is majority women and they live off those likes. Removing those will make usage rates drop and open them up to a competitor who gives women that sweet validation back.

They've been testing this in other parts of the world since earlier this year and it hit Canada late summer, it's only just now expanded to the US. Account owners can see how many likes a post gets it's everyone else that can't. They want the emphasis on content and not likes.

This isn't hurting anything business related at all, follower counts and comments are still public. What you're seeing around is the amount of people that are actually living miserably in real life and need as many other people as possible to know that they're liked to make it through the day. We need that reset already.

Loool please don't be naive enough to belive that this business and its rich owners give a damn about the well being of the general public, Nicki is right. People love trends and shyt in this planet, that's how things go viral, now without like features it's harder for everyone else to see what's popping, things won't get pushed or promoted based on likes, the amount of likes a video or a brand gets is validation to others, without that it makes it harder for the normal person to blow it. YouTube are doing the same thing with how they are changing. All these platforms are making it harder for the regular person to come up through them

For people who didn't listen but commented away :comeon:, Nicki is saying that Instagram's excuse for mental health and self-esteem for users is :duck: and it's really about them being upset that they aren't getting a cut of the money that individuals make through IG by getting sponsored for "likes". You know, because if companies see influencers getting a certain amount of "Likes" per posts, they might want them to endorse their products and IG is  they're not getting that dinero. Never thought about it that way. She may be on to something. :ehh:
