I looooooove cats (plus I'm looking to adopt) and sitting around with some or one sitting in my lap while I read and relax would be amazing but idk if you're just supposed to play with them and pat them up the whole time or not which I kinda don't want to do

Cats are the business! To me a cat is less work than a dog. You don't have to take them for a walk or anything like that. You do have to play with them or else they will tear up stuff.
