Old heads who lived in the 90s, what was the exact year hiphop/rap became mainstream and blew up?

bruh im just curious as i was a little kid in the early 2000s and late 90s. When I entered HS rap was by far the most popular music among teens my age. I just want to know when the big switch happened, when rap started to become popular among most young people of all ethnic groups.

1986 Run DMC - Raising Hell album

yeah but in the 1980s and most of the 1990s, rock/metal was still dominant among non-blacks. Like it or not, as soon as cacs started to fukk with rap it immediately became mainstream. Run DMC was crossover but they was not touching guns and roses, metallica, nirvana, whitesnake, etc

I'd say the rise of gangsta rap. So early, mid 90's.

Fred.
