And that’s what I’m saying, the NBA itself is very complicit in how the game has gotten softer and less physical, and I think framing it as a player issue without acknowledging that is disingenuous
The NHL is not legislating physicality out of the game, they encourage it
What's funny is that the narrative of the early 00s NBA was that players were... take a guess... lazy, overpaid and ungrateful, ("i gotta family to feed" - Sprewell), lacked fundamentals (just a buncha And-1 dribbling but couldn't shoot); not pure and passionate like college ball... in addition to the other stuff like "image problems" and having a bunch of "thugs" in need of a dress code.
Fast forward 20+ years later... now players dress "fashionable", all can "shoot", the secret service rushes the court if a semblance of an altercation breaks out, and if anything players
over train trying to perfect their fundamentals/skills...
...and us "fans" are still miserable
But yea that's why there's always a racial element to the criticisms compared to a product like the NHL. Then there's also simple back-in-the-day syndrome, where Luka will be critized for being fat, lazy, and only about the money... but then Shaq will be brought up as the paragon of basketball virtue and fitness.
