It makes sense because they have the worst collective of bigs in the league. Despite the fact there's the risk of it being a net negative on the defensive end, if his minutes at the 4 are handled appropriately then it improves their win probability.

How many minutes at the 4 you think he could play while still being effective on the offensive end?

the monte ellis move was a good pickup, but even he is a lil undersized for the 2

I'm not sure, I guess we'll have to wait and see how he handles the workload and what Vogel's plans are. I'm guessing since they have an abundance of bigs, even despite no one really standing out - you'll see J.Hill and Allen rotate through there when either George is on the bench or when Miles is on the bench (George to 3 - withstanding Budinger/S.Hill).

A lineup of:

G.Hill
Ellis
Miles
George
Mahinmi

puts them in the best possible position to win games. You ain't winning shyt starting Jordan Hill and Ian Mahinmi together. The one advantage I can see them having over teams, is that they have THREE ball-handlers amongst the starting unit - which will allow them to switch shyt up on offense. There's a lot of issues with this team (particularly on the defensive end), but at least Vogel/Bird are maximizing the immediate potential of this team. If PG at the 4 doesn't work out, they can always alter things - better to try and build on what potential you might have rather than simply just going through the motions (= playing their bigs the majority of minutes in the frontcourt).

Is it really "stupid" to suggest this lineup:

G.Hill
Ellis
Miles
George
Mahinmi

isn't better than this one:

G.Hill
Ellis
George
J.Hill
Mahinmi

:jbhmm:

:martin:

J.Hill ain't stoppin shyt on the defensive end (at least despite George giving away bulk and it taking a toll on his body - he'll certainly be more effective given his foot speed, constant action and length) and he sure as hell isn't giving you the production you need on the offensive end; all FOUR of Ellis, George, J.Hill, Mahinmi operate either in the mid-range or in the paint. Having Miles out there gives you a solid 3-pt shooting option - two altogether if you count G.Hill - creating more space for everyone else on the court. They'll also have the advantage when the other team's PF will be guarding George on offense.

And are we forgetting that if George is playing the 4, and there's a switch on the PNR - he'll be guarding the ball-handler. That puts them in a greater position to lead the other team down a dead end, rather than having J.Hill switching on those plays.

Paul George guarding 4s > Jordan Hill guarding 4s
Paul George guarding ball-handlers on switch situations > Jordan Hill guarding ball-handlers on switch situations

I could see him playing the 4 in spurts as a change of pace but this is stupid

The league is going nuts with the Stretch 4 dynamic.

Like @Gil Scott-Heroin said up there, shyt is on the switch he will have the advantage and is pretty decent defensively mostly likely gaurding a smaller position player. But when it comes to rebounding and guarding another 4, he may have difficulty.

Offensively im sure he will eat. Not an ideal position for him to play but that team has very little talent so he has to do more.

If they were a championship caliber team or a contender then I could understand such a move. But the team is gonna suck regardless, so they are taking these risks (he is coming off injury as well) for what exactly? To be lower in the lottery? To maybe luck up and sneak in the playoffs to get demolished by Cleveland?
