Neck ties and boxing gloves.
nas only really has that one undisputed classic - and it didnt sell well in real-time.
everything after illmatic has been hit-or-miss, depending on who you ask.

as for the max b thing, did max say something about this, or are you referring to the "im biggie, jigga & pac" thing??

Not only that but he was a massive influence on all three of them while being younger or the same age.

And to the poster who said Melo?

You're out of your god damn mind.

It's funny. If we,re talking walking that tight rope between sucess and not dumbing down to make more money no has done that better than Nas.

It's funny how with certain rappers in certain threads get put on a pedestal for sales but then it gets flipped in others.

HARD TRUTHS.

hes pushed as this undisputed top 5 rapper but if you anonymously look at his portfolio, he could easily be mistaken for a top 20 rap artist instead.

not a popular opinion on here. this is Nas country. i get it. but thats real talk.
if he were considered top 5 only on the coli or only on the net or something, then i would've agreed with you,
but we all know that ain't the truth
he is not pushed, he has earned his top 5 spot.
his portfolio is actually quite impressive.
this may be nas country, but he is considered top 5 outside of nas country as well.
and that is the truth.

stuff like this is why people dont like nas fans.

Nas blatantly dumbed down for dollars plenty of times.

just because he failed most of the time, doesnt mean that those records dont exist.

His name.

But how many lyrical club records came from NY, post-June 2003 when Lil Jon dropped "Get Low"? Not many. You cant judge Nas on hit records post-southern invasion of the radio, because their formula of a hit record is a direct contradiction of Nas's foundation of poetic lyricism.

plenty.

and its not even about a club record. that was never exactly his strong point to begin with.

he just fell off, which is natural.

youre arguing with me about stuff that i didnt say. im not saying hes some internet goat like hes andre 3000 or somebody.

the fact of the matter is, hes part of the force-fed top 4, as pushed by the media and he clearly doesnt get play like the other 3.

yes his portfolio is impressive. but again, if you put it to the blinder test, it reads like the portfolio of a top 20 rapper - which is great as well, but those are reasons why he can be seen as overrated.

the only problem being that i've read/seen many fan made top 5s with him in it.
magazines/internet publications had fans vote many times and he is there,so is that also media influenced?
hell, even his peers, not media, hold him in the highest esteem
and if we are being honest, everyone in that top 5 can be seen as overrated if we start nitpicking. i've seen all kinds of arguments made for why jay, pac, big,etc is overrated.

YES @ the bolded.

and i totally agree with the last sentence. pac is the only one of the force-fed four thats actually in my top 5, and even with him, i wouldnt bat an eye if somebody left pac off of their list.

This is stupid. How many rappers that debuted in 94 have the binder test like Nas? shyt Biggie only has 2 fukkin albums and one of em dropped right when he died. How doesn’t a nikka who got like 7 or 8 multiplat albums. And like 3 gold ones yet maintain his lyrics not considered? This is goofy shyt. Name one rapper other than Jay Z who debuted in 94 and still sell records in 2021? Still getting grammy nods in 2021?. nikkas is clowns on this site ain’t shyt force fed being that the nikka gets shytted on in the media more than anything else. If anything if we being 100 only rappers who deserve the nod at this point is Pac and Jay. Am I right? Because u talk force fed. U don’t have no muthafukkin problem with someone putting Rakim or Kane in a top 5 meanwhile them 2 nikkas ain’t drop nothing noteworthy in damn near 30 years. Explain that.

SD didn’t sell 1M copies it shipped that and it’s last sales report had it at around 740K. In 2004 he didn’t have a top 10 selling first week among albums released that year and in that year going Platinum was light.

Snoop doesn’t sell as much as Nas because he’s been an independent artist and because he releases music all the time.

These are not facts. In 2004, going platinum wasn't light. It was a big deal and less rappers were reaching that status. You were not going platinum without a monster hit to carry you. This is what platinum looked like in 2004:

Multi platinum:

Eminem- Encore
Nelly- Sweat
Nelly- Suit
Kanye- College Dropout

Platinum:

Twista- Kamikaze
Flip- U Gotta Feel Me
Lloyd Banks- Hunger For More
Buck- Straight Outta Cassville
T.I.- Urban Legend
Jadakiss- Kiss of Death
Snoop Dogg- Rhythm & Gangsta
Lil Jon- Crunk Juice
Ludacris- Red Light District

^^^ All of these had monster hit singles. Some of them had multiple monster singles. Nas still went platinum without one.

Also, if you are not applying Soundscan numbers to other 2004 releases, then don't talk about going platinum. The two are not synonymous.

Dudes are literally downplaying man's off sales and numbers now...which still look good

"Well he had a run of 7 plat and then he only went gold next two or three guys"
:dead:
nikkas crazy and even bullshytting and lying in the process to discredit him. Yet in the same breath saying that nikkas with like 2 plat albums or 2 albums period deserve to be over him. Lol
