Have worked in retail for the better part of ten years (with the exeption of joining the Army for 3 years)

Retail Electronics (Best Buy) specifically

If you are looking to make it a career be prepared to WORK your ass off and sacrifice holidays. I haven't had a true holiday off besides Christmas Day since 2004.

Be prepared to work long hours (9-15 hour shifts) weekly

I wouldn't recommend it unless you absolutely LOVE it. More than the pay (which in my situation is VERY good) I really have a true passion for my job, it's what gets me through all the long hours.
U have a passion for retail:ohhh: I didn't know that was possible...

No, I'm in Raleigh, NC.

Yeah, I might do both and just work two jobs. If I get promoted quickly, I might not have to.
Don't do both. I have plenty of expereicne in all the retail hotspots and pretty much any service locatin you can think of, best buy, malls, phone stores, to country clubs, olive gardens, etc etc..

I will tell ya it's best to work in retail at a wireless cell company, if youa re gonna do retail. You will come in at about the same pay per hour, but you'll also grab a quick $700+ a month on commission. Not to mention much less is expected of you, and it's easier to close up and get out.

The most fun tho, is service. Which is amazing as long as you go somewhere that's busy, and has a cool atmosphere as well as medium to high priced food. THe best part is the actually interaction with coworkers. Retail ppl never seem to be that "fun" IME. Restaurants tho, theres always parties, and the fam is always growing, losing ppl, old employess bringing there friends in. It can be a great way to set up a better social life.

If you are cute and not very social, I'd recommend being in service at a place like an upscale hotel like the westin or the W. You can make lots of money working just 20 to 30 hrs a week at the bar.

Jesus christ the arguments I got into with customers...Even at a 24 hour store we almost had to call the cops because these belligerent folks were upset(they were already drunk)
that we would not sell them beer. Can't sell beer to drunk folks. And it was 3 am. We stop selling alcohol at 1am:snoop:
Customers leaving.... People act like they go deaf & blind when the announcements are made and lights are going off. These fukkers still shopping with like 3 lights on.

Both are complete hell. I especially hate call centers. As for service it depends on where you work. If you work in service try to do restaurants and bars. If you are attractive and sweet you can get great tips. When it comes to retail try to pick a large scale store, because you get less problems from upper management since there is so many of you guys. Also try to be on the floor and not the cash registers, because those customers will make you :angry::angry::angry: I worked at a large department store and these was the shyt I got. 1. I deserve a discount. 2. I want to speak to the manger because this is too expensive. 3. I shop here a lot so I deserve a discount. 4. Um I've had this item for 5 years can I return it? 5. The line is too long where are the other workers?!!!
Smaller stores are great if you have an understanding manager.....:stylin:, but if the manager is a bytch there will be hell to pay :mjcry:. I worked at a small retail store with a crazy female manager. She bytched moan and whine every second. I had to open with her and deal with her bullshyt every second. The worse was opening at 9AM and I didn't go on break until 3PM. It was torture :mindblown:

I love my current job. I pick my hours and it is flexible. Thank the heavens:lawd::blessed:

You damn near have to get on that Amityville Horror demonic voice and get on the loud speaker and say GET. OUT!!!!
Yup, when I worked at TJMaxx we told them that we are closing the registers and come back tomorrow. But they still would like to walk around shopping and touching stuff.

yup....I was there 9 tho because we had to stay after and clean up everynight :scust:

OMG I remember :mjcry::mjcry::mjcry:

At the smaller store I would work from 9AM to 9PM, close, clean up, and leave at 10PM. At the bigger store I would work from 3PM to 10PM, close, clean up, and leave at 12AM. Thank goodness I left retail. :blessed:
