90s rap wouldn't have happened without Kool G, but I don't see his influence on the modern guys as much as the generation like Nas and Big.

I meant Rae and Ghost influenced the new movement because they'd rock weird beats while wearing over-the-top fly shyt and rapping about selling coke in really esoteric ways.
All of this is correct, but I do think at some point we have to set a cutoff point for direct influences. Everyone is influenced by someone, who was influenced by someone, etc.

I don't think it's a diss to say that Rae and Ghost aren't directly a catalyst for the specific type of underground street rap we hear today. I think Roc Marci is the most clear and direct influence, with Sean Price helping pave the way for the lane. Of course we can keep going backwards on who influenced Sean, etc, and that's fine, but I think going back 15 years to Monkey Barz is plenty of time. Once we start going back to Rae and Ghost in the mid 90's we might as well be paying homage to all the street rap cats that have come before now.

You and @Piff Perkins make great points on this stuff. I never considered it but I agree with you guys.
The late 90s were some weird years looking back after Big and Pac died. You had the BCC who was underground trying to go for a more accessible sound. Meanwhile dudes that were underground like Canibus and DMX had the streets on fire and DMX actually crossed over when he seemed like the last person who would’ve been able to. The Roots had a huge single with Erykah Badu. Then that whole Rawkus shyt. The lines were really blurred those years

So health issues changed the cadence of his raps? :martin:
They actually did. I don't mean to name drop too heavily, but Sean Price was a decent friend. And I don't just mean an acquaintance. We used to kick it, and he'd stay at my place, write rhymes, etc. He even wrote some songs for Jesus Price in my car, because he liked the stereo I had.

He developed sleep apnea from gaining weight, and his breathing changed. His cardio and breath control got worse too. He had a more difficult time rhyming as fluidly in between Monkey Barz/Jesus Price and Mic Tyson. He absolutely had to tweak his flow a bit, and it became more difficult for him to do longer patterns and cadences, because he'd run out of breath. There's tracks on Mic Tyson and the final Heltah Skeltah album where he pauses way longer between bars too. He would do it after funny lines, or extra hard lines for effect, but it was also a way for him to buy time to catch his breath.

RIP P :mjcry:

For the People was the group album that came out in 97 that was highly anticipated after Black Moon, Smif N Wesson, Heltah Skeltah, and OGC all release albums. They had created their own sound based around Da Beatminzerz production but completely abandoned it on that group alum. Then they release a string of forgettable albums like the Coco Brovas, the second OGC album, the second Black Moon album and that Buckshot BDI solo album. Only album that was really up to par was the second Heltah Skeltah album. They were kinda written off til the second BCC album The Chosen Few which I felt was underrated. Then they had a resurgence when they hooked up with 9th Wonder and them and Sean reinvented himself

now i remember what record.
the record that was supposed to be.

this but the full length.

oh yeah,....
they royally jagged that one.
totally went away from what made them bcc.
all we wanted was beatminerz production like the debut black moon, SHINING, storm, and nocturnal.

Definitely don’t feel bad! He kept a lot of his health issues on the low, and not many people knew anything until after he passed away, and to this day he still isn’t a lot of info out there. I’m not trying to sound secretive either, because honestly I don’t even really know what the exact cause of death was. I just know that he was not healthy.

I think all things considered he actually did a pretty good job of trying to make the best out of a bad situation when it came to changing up his flow and delivery a little bit. Also I thought it was dope that he had so much charisma that he kind of made you not even realize it. I just listen to Mic Tyson and it didn’t sound bad at all to me. I listen to monkey Barz afterwards and I could hear the difference obviously, but I do really like Tyson.

Actually got to meet Heltah Skeltah back in 96. I lived near Morgan State and me and my boys would walk to the football games sometimes. One of the games we were at had hardly any fans. This dude a couple rows in front of us turned around and was like

“There’s Rock and Ruck:gladbron:

We turned around and they were sitting right behind us. They blended right in with the rest of the college students. We chopped it up with them and they were cool as shyt. Turned out they had a show on campus that night but we couldn’t go becuz we weren’t students. They liked the fact a couple of 15 years olds were really into their music

All facts, sean p held it down through some dark times, that weird ass 04-09 era. Him and 9th held it down then, Roc and alchemist picked up from where they left off
No doubt. It’s cool to hate on 9th on the coli, but he easily could’ve turned away from the underground scene, but he stayed active. He helped revive BCC, introduced Murs to a new audience and helped serve as a person that linked west coast and east coast artists, helped Skyzoo get his start, and also got Jean Grae a bigger audience.

He tried to do his version of a Soul Survivor/1st Infantry, bridging mainstream and underground artists on songs together, but for whatever reason Dream Merchant 2 didn’t get crazy critical acclaim.

He also did a great album with Ness but Diddy shut it down.
