Also, Herbert’s rookie year was the same OL scheme that got Rivers killed week after week, with worse players on it. They even had the previous year’s LG as the starting center for Herbert, not even a specialized center.
They basically knew they were giving Herbert a worse Offensive Line and didn’t care because nobody expected Herbert to be that good. Herbert being more mobile was a big factor in making it work and the Chargers drafted Rashawn Slater and brought in an entire new Offensive Line the next year to protect the new franchise QB.
Rivers took 66 sacks his last two years with the Chargers and only 19 sacks when he went to Indy. That’s how bad the “worse OL” was that Herbert had to start with.
Point all being, you got to basically prove it. No one is getting special treatment and moving around their draft boards until you show you’re not a stop gap/experimental/temporary QB.
you’ll know if a team thinks their QB is special once they start putting Offensive Linemen around them and giving them weapons rather than draft defense/BPA. Maybe let go of a few coaches as well. That’s exactly what the Chargers did. They have to really prove they’re good first though.
