so 3.9 yards per rush makes you a HOF these days?

He was a really good football player, but I wanna say he only had a 5-6 year run where he was doing his thing.... I could be wrong..

You'd be right, I think. But for those 5-6 years, he was about as :whew: as it got when it came to offensive weapons. Had he done what he did in the 70s, he'd already be in by now.

Hall of Fame is suppose to be reaching that elite level and staying there for a historically significant amount of time. Having an elite season and then hanging around in mediocrity for a decade isn't Hall of Fame caliber to me. Those mediocre seasons add nothing to a resume. I'd rather vote in a Terrell Davis

The thing about Bettis was that he was never mediocre, regardless of the situation. He was a top 10 bellcow back and probably a top 5 short-yardage/goal-line back when his role changed. Whatever role he was supposed to play, he did it well.

I may stand alone here when I say this but I'm going to say it...

I wanna slap anyone that brings up TD for the Hall
He played behind the 2nd best oline in history(Dallas 90's being #1) and did nothing great as a runner
but a lot of things good
as a runner there are a lot of running backs better than him
yes he had some big years
but the fact that the likes of Olandis Gary, Rueben Droughns, Mike Anderson and even Clinton Portis had big years following him getting hurt should explain things
I'm not saying TD wasn't a helluva back
but I watched his tape a few months back and as a former RB
he did nothing for me on the vision test
not elite speed, not elite breaking tackles, or elite feet, nor elite vision
he was pretty good in every category but not elite
dude wasn't even that fast

love him as a person but the same reason I shyt on Emmitt, I'm shytting on TD

The Bus is the best short yardage back ever
He is also the best RB ever to have when you have a lead
He kills a defense in the 4th qtr cause he is hard to tackle and the more tired you are as a defender the more fukked up things get trying to stop him

Mike Anderson, Olandis Gary , and Clinton Portis as opposed to Willie Parker Duce Staley and Rashard Mendenhall. Terrell Davis had one of the great seasons in NFL history as a running back, and he has an MVP. TD sure did have a great offensive line, but what do u call a line with HOF Dermotti Dawson and soon to be HOF Alan Faneca? Emmitt Smith had holes the size of the damn Grand Canyon but his production is set in stone. You still gotta do it. Bettis turned into a fine role player later in his career. A nice power back. Okay call up Mike Alstott and Rodney Hampton too then.

It's hard calculating the YPC for power/short yardage backs since they are put into a lot of obvious running situations facing 8 at the line to get 1 or 2 yards which will greatly affect YPC if done enough.

Did he face those situations any more than any other every down back? I'm talking before the role player days.

You supposed to go by what you saw him do on the feel in every football scenario possible..... and stats never tell the entire truth
What many of us saw on the field was a player that was never even top 5 in his position.

People keep bringing up his rookie season. That was actually his best year.

Again, Bettis was top 5 rushing yards only 3 times.

Only reason I disliked Bettis was because he was giving too much hope to the offensive linemen at my high school.

Me::stopitslime: Coach ain't going for that bullshyt.
Offensive guard: :jawalrus:I'm the fastest lineman we have, plus I know all the plays.

Me: :scust:Muhfukkuh you ran a 5.3 in the 40..
Guard: :umad:Bet. Watch when I'm starting HB I don't wanna hear shyt.

Head Coach: :mjlol: If you don't ya ass back to them blocking sleds with the rest of the offensive linemen.

Like another guy said, what's the difference between Bettis and Steven Jackson? The ring and the steelers helmet. That's how we are defining hall of famers now? Dillon, Taylor etc have similar stats and aren't sniffing the hall. Hanging on a few marginal years and adding a lil to your stat totals doesn't push you forward in my hall of fame discussion. It's not a knock to be in that tier of rbs. Those guys were great rbs for a decade. That's just not a hall of fame tier of rbs

Exactly he was a very solid player not a dominant great one

Problem with the nfl hof is that they need to put in a certain amount every year so good not great players like Bettis get in

But those stats don't lie. What else should we go by? How the player made you feel? "leadership"? There's numerous backs with on par as Bettis that didn't hang on at the end nearly as bad. What's the diff between Jerome Bettis and Steven Jackson aside from the Steeler logo on the helmet?
jackson couldve have been a hof if he didnt get hurt all of the time
