I know its doom and gloom but they really werent that far off. They kept losing in the margins this year. Thats coaching, luck, and frankly being tired. They looked tired, like they just couldnt shift into that top gear when needed. A long offseason, some well earned shame, and solid offseason moves and they should be fine.

I think last year making it to the SB masked how flawed the team is

Last year was one of the luckiest runs to the SB I’ve ever seen. They were not very good

It wasn’t just that they won so isn’t close games it’s that they had to pull so many games out of their ass and get improbable wins against bad football teams

They really didn’t play well all year. Even the Texans wild card game the Texans let them off the hook

I feel like the only good game they played was the playoff game against the Bills

Kelce is done and so Mahomes no longer has his security blanket. That's the biggest difference imo. They can't convert key 3rd downs or make any big plays because they don't have anyone as good as Prime Kelce or Tyreek. Rice ain't it, Worthy ain't it.

Prime Kelce would have been open for those 4th down plays.

And they still 3peat if the Giants arent stupid. No other NFC team wouldve even had a chance against them.

There was definitely luck, as there is with every SB run. But they made the plays when plays needed to be made all season. Basically the opposite of this season. In retrospect, I feel like last year was their last gasp. The changes we talking bout for this year shoulda been made last year but they had a great record and made the SB so as someone else said, issues were masked. Also, the rest of the division and conference improved. In previous years, they would be 8-5 or 9-4 with their division all but locked up.

Will they trade for Reek or Jefferson?

Which RB(s) are they taking in the draft?

It doesn't matter which RB they take in the draft or sign in FA because they refuse to commit to establishing the run as part of the offense. Until there's a philosophical pivot in that regard, they will always live and die with Mahomes, and as great as he is, the league continues to show that even the greatest QBs can only carry it solo for so long.

The number one thing they need to do is be a more balanced offense. Keep Kareem as the vet and throw the bag at Allgeier or Breece Hall. I had hopes for Pacheco, but it's concerning that he can't outright overtake Hunt (I think part of the reason Pacheco can't overtake him is that KC doesn't commit to the run, and Pacheco seems the type of runner who needs carries to get going).

Whichever one you get, draft a complementary back in the mid-rounds. I'd suggest going for Breece. Allgeier's top motivation will be going somewhere that gives him the backfield to himself, or at least the lion's share. Houston's a good spot for him with Mixon's uncertain future.

As far as WR, they need a high-level possession/chain-mover type that's the "when in doubt" target once Mahomes starts improvising. I'm assuming that's gonna be Rice once Kelce moves on, but then you have to replace Rice with a high-level guy too. They're in this weird gift/curse situation where anybody can have a big game out of nowhere, but as a result, they probably have failed to invest in defining roles for guys, and they don't have the talent to let that fall by the wayside.

Defensively, they need a QB hunter. Other areas of improvement would be nice, but the outright need is a pass rusher.

They've got the QB and are solid defensively. Their pedigree is as good as it gets, so this isn't a rebuild. It's just a reality check.

Hunt hasn't been an effective RB for a pretty long time yet KC keeps trotting him out there. I'm not sure if he's way more aware in blitz pickup than Pacheco but Andy really likes playing him.

They need a whole revamp of the RB room. Breece Hall would've been an amazing pickup especially if the Jets only wanted a 3 for him.

Perfect example of nerds ruining a team. They've needed a legit RB for years but because nerds convinced people that it's a worthless position, the GM has decided to rely on a late day 3 pick (Pacheco) and Kareem fukking Hunt. Ironically we've seen some shift back to RBs being important lately. Bijan and Gibbs in the 1st round, Saquon, Jonathan Taylor...it's clear that an elite run game is important. Especially if you have two really good backs. We've now had multiple drafts with good RB depth and KC passed on all of them.

Hunt's also exceptional in short-yardage. My guess is the main reason is that he's better in situational ball -- and blitz pickup is more valuable than a LOT of RB-centric skills, the way coaches tell it -- and execution in situational ball has been a trump card of the Chiefs for a few years.

I understand the value of having guys who don't play often but understand their role and how it should look. No issue with that, but after a certain point... you need to force the issue. Either Pacheco is going to be the guy, or you're going to go get another one. Keep Kareem as the mentor type who only plays if no one else is there.

They should have paid whatever it cost for Breece, though.

Problem with Pacheco is twofold - he can't stay healthy and he's not really a receiver out of the backfield.

True. I feel you can learn the latter, though.

But yeah, they need to get a RB that can be an offensive centerpiece type of player, and commit to using him as such.
