I heard about this as well but im sure the same thing happened with illmatic
I do remember Illmatic being one of the most heavily bootleg tapes when it came out. The retail didn't sell a whole lot back then but everyone in the streets were bumping it that spring/summer it was out. That should tell you right there what was going on.
It did sell. Album went gold in its initial run.I thought the myth was the album was bootlegged prior to release meaning the actual album was bootlegged “found 40k copies in a garage in wueens” or some shyt.
Which is the excuse why it didnt sell. Nas stan reason anyway.
I’m a Villian was on the 20th anniversary edition of Illmatic.Shame we never got them in cdq on an illmatic anniversary or something
The other tracks need a cdq release too
Come on motherfukker come onYou mean the version with the original Machine Gun Funk by Premo?
Sadat X is on a track too i forget which
The version the Source reviewed and gave 5 mics had a different beat for Represent. Quiet as kept.Nah. Poor quality cassette rips were floating around, but that was the same album that went to retail.
Is this it?
I think the Sadat X track was the One Love Remix

http://thesource.com/2016/01/17/tod...illmatic-certified-gold-by-riaa-20-years-ago/It did sell. Album went gold in its initial run.
IWW came out July 2, 1996. So Illmatic went gold before the second album, or any single from it, dropped.http://thesource.com/2016/01/17/tod...illmatic-certified-gold-by-riaa-20-years-ago/
“Jan 17, 2016 · Illmatic, the epic debut album from Nas, was certified gold by the RIAA on this date in 1996. “
20 months to go gold is initial run? For the most hyped rapper of the era?
36 chambers went gold in 4 months
Ready to die went gold in one month
Tical in 2 months
Cuban linx in 2 months
The infamous in 2 months
Like i said ... “Nas stans”. It was written was nas mainstream success
its a fukkin crime that this beat didnt find its way onto illmatic![]()
it kinda did
