I heard about this as well but im sure the same thing happened with illmatic

Not true. The bootlegs for Illmatic were tape copies of the review copy for the album. It's the same album as the one you heard.
Back then artists submitted their album to the rap publications ahead of time, so the review would be in the mag when the album came out.

I do remember Illmatic being one of the most heavily bootleg tapes when it came out. The retail didn't sell a whole lot back then but everyone in the streets were bumping it that spring/summer it was out. That should tell you right there what was going on.

Yeah. I feel as if "All For One" was hit hard as well, but not as hard as "Illmatic".

I mean if your a dirtbomb kid with 10 bucks in your pocket, are you gonna go to Crazy Eddie's/The Wiz and buying ONE tape?

Or are you going to take that ten and scoop THREE tapes off that West African cloth lol?

I thought the myth was the album was bootlegged prior to release meaning the actual album was bootlegged “found 40k copies in a garage in wueens” or some shyt.

Which is the excuse why it didnt sell. Nas stan reason anyway.
It did sell. Album went gold in its initial run.

“Jan 17, 2016 · Illmatic, the epic debut album from Nas, was certified gold by the RIAA on this date in 1996. “

20 months to go gold is initial run? For the most hyped rapper of the era?

36 chambers went gold in 4 months
Ready to die went gold in one month
Tical in 2 months
Cuban linx in 2 months
The infamous in 2 months

Like i said ... “Nas stans”. It was written was nas mainstream success

IWW came out July 2, 1996. So Illmatic went gold before the second album, or any single from it, dropped.
I don’t know why you’re bringing up other albums and when they went gold. I didn’t say anything about how quickly the album sold. It was a slow burn. It kept selling. Week after week. And it went gold. It sold well. In its initial album run.
