def jam was hell-bent on creating the next big star that they could take credit for, that wasnt signed to labels under their umbrella(rocafella, murder inc, etc) and desperately wanted him to stand toe-to-toe with 50 cent. so they thru all this money behind him and f*cked up alot of their other artists' promo in the process. it was a wrap for everybody else who dropped on def jam that summer/fall.

in reality, they shouldve just promoted him as what he was - the next big thing out of desert storm. instead of trying to be the def jam answer to 50 cent, he shouldve just been def jam's more serious answer to fabolous. its crazy cuz with fabolous beginning to dissappoint, and dj clue being all over MTV, they had the inside track to just do what they were supposed to do.

also, instead of dropping "focus" as the 2nd single, they dropped some garbage chit with busta rhymes.

and of course, the jay-z blackballing was the nail in the coffin.

plus please tell me what jersey niccas are marketable like that?

hell, jersey is who blew rap up in the 1st place. NOT new york.

put his friends on and keeps them eating
hasnt limited himself much and says what he wants
got into a back and forth with Jayz when he was like 24
and he's not even 40 yet

I mean I dont know how you call that an L at all, he's progressively more famous every year than he has been in the last.
His name alone commands money and deals at this point.

It’s a mix of what everyone have previously mentioned. Ahead of his time content wise, label issues, junkie habits, poor attitude towards people that could help him, and then it’s just a numbers game after that. That was the era of anyone and everyone landing a big single. Everyone wasn’t going to make it in the long run.

There’s nothing he does musically that’s head and shoulders above anyone else if we’re being honest. Lyrically he’s held his own with some of the best of his era, but musically he’s average at best. The fact he was able to maintain a cult fan base is an achievement.

That Budden debut album was completye underwhelminng trash. People act like blowing up is just about the hit but you have to come with an album people wanna listen to. 50 didn't just blow up because of In Da Club. People fukked with the whole album.

Budden's shyt didn't even sound like it had much money invested in it. It's like he blew his whole budget on Just Blaze (who gave Joe two total throw aways after Pump It Up). Why the fukk did WB produce damn near the whole album?

Most of the production was forgettable to trash.

I fukked with a couple of track but the album just felt weak and not like a real major label debut album.

Def Jam gave him a chance to drop The Growth back in 2005 when Jay was running things. Jay let everyone drop an album that year (bleek, young gunz, beanie, Kanye, Juelz, etc). Joe had "Gangsta Party" with Nate Dogg. Even though it was a flop they were still gonna let him drop his album, but Joe refused saying he wasn't ready and that he wanted more than the 11-12 songs limit for the album. After that too much time had passed and they stopped spending money on him and pretty much shelved him.

I forgot what interview I heard this from. This was damn near a decade ago. But Joe wanted something like 18-20 songs. I forgot why, but record labels try to keep albums short (9-12 tracks) because anything past a certain track or length in minutes number and they have to pay to add more tracks or some shyt like that. If you check Young Gunz 2nd album, they only had 12 songs. Their first album had 17 songs. A lot of those 2005-2007 Def Jam albums had shorter track listings. Again, I don't remember the politics behind it but it had something to do with what I said earlier. Of course not every artist followed that, but Joe could've still dropped if he agreed to it.
