I disagree and think that Nintendo is their own biggest problem.
Their current CEO is very conservative and has gone on record in saying he isnt trying to compete. Nintendo's investors have also shown they aren't as willing to take massive losses at the beginning of each gen like MS and Sony. MS' move to move gaming online and all the other things they've done are things Nintendo could adjust to if they really wanted to. They're a billion dollar company and were printing money during the vast majority of last gen.

The fact that Nintnedo refuses to implement basic things like an account system, being caught off guard by the difficulties of HD despite being a gen late, and things like pandering to a small audience with Nintendo Directs instead of announcing games at E3 and its easy to see why the Wii U is flopping.

Proof?
there's not enough room for three equally successful makers in this market. home consoles cost too much. the average Joe is only buying one console. there's no reason for him to buy a Nintendo console. the home console market has always been a two horse race. when other parties try to enter it usually doesn't work out well.

The guy that only plays games like GTA, Assassin's Creed, and Call of Duty doesn't give a shyt about a Mario game and it could be the best made game ever and he still doesn't give a shyt. that style has no appeal to him. those gamers who play those mainstream franchises the ones that go on to sell many millions are the backbone of the industry now.

Nintendo faces the same problem in the home console arena that Sony faces in the portable arena. honestly they should just merge and pool their games together on the same platforms. it would solve both their problems.

exactly and to add on their banking on the 6-12 demographic to push their system. My son used to like Mario and even that lil dude is tired of that shyt. its sad to me because i grew up on nes shyt, there are just more appealing games to children these days

Ok, I admit it. I don't have a statement from Nintendo saying that. But the Wii had 7 games selling more then 20 million and New Super Mario Bros. Wii was the only game that wasn't a pack in/bundle from day 1.

Wii Sports - Pack in
Mario Kart Wii - bundle with Wii Wheel
Wii Sports Resort - pack in with Wii MotionPlus and later a bundle with The Wii
Wii Play - bundle with with Wii Remote
Wii Fit - Pack in with the Balance Board
Wii Fit plus - Pack in with the Balance Board

Most Wii owners just wanted shiny new things

Microsoft came in and established themselves. Its musical chairs and when the music stopped Nintendo was left standing. There's just not enough chairs for everyone to have a seat.

at one time we had Sega, Sony and Nintendo in the marketplace. Sega was forced out. Three major platforms just doesn't work. the third parties won't back that many either and the Wii U is Power PC while the Xbox One, PS4, and PC are x86. Like Sega before them Nintendo will be forced out.

So how do explain last gen?
All 3 consoles moved over 70 million units and are still selling fairly well.

This goes both ways though. Someone that prefers Japanese games probably isnt rushing to Gamestop to pick up Fifa or Madden.

These are 2 completely different situation imo.

Sony is struggling with the Vita because of a lack of notable software, they're biggest devs dont put games on it, and memory card prices. Big Japanese companies putting a lot behind mobile isnt helping either.

Nintendo has a console on the market that has little 3rd party support, has a name issue that's led to some consumer confusion, and devalued their console hardware due to the Wii not being supported in its last days.

Less then 4 out of every 100 Wii owners bought Skyward Sword. More people bought Link's Crossbow Training

Link's Crossbow Training is set in a world in the style of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, and in the game the player assumes the role of the protagonist of The Legend of Zelda series, Link. To perfect Link's crossbow marksmanship, the player must pass a series of tests, starting with stationary bullseye targets, before moving onto moving targets and actual enemies.[1] After every level, the player gets a medal depending upon their score. The types of medals range from bronze to platinum.

Iwata has to go. He's steering the titanic into the iceberg unwavering with a slow and steady hand. With everything falling apart around him his response is we'll just keep doing what we've done for decades and if we keep doing that things will right themselves eventually.

Nintendo's next system after the Wii should have been a console / portable hybrid that could plug up to the TV or be played on the go with the same games either way. Instead they made a console / portable hybrid that's tethered to the console side and isn't portable.
Correct me if I'm wrong but was Iwata not mostly responsible for the Wii, DS and 3DS? I grant you that Wii U is a huge misstep that could have been very close to not being one and I also give you that Nintendo needs to get with the times as far certain things go (online infrastructure for example) but I can't say Iwata has to go if he's reponsible for those 3.

last gen was Sony and Microsoft dueling it out. Nintendo made a gimmick and it caught on and people bought their console. most of those people weren't gamers and other than a few Nintendo games based on the motion gimmick and even fewer third party ones like Just Dance they weren't interested in sticking around. this is why Nintendo who sold 90+ million Wiis pulled the plug on it and put out the Wii U. the bubble popped on the fad.

Sony is struggling with the Vita due to lack of software and that's because why should a third party make a Vita title when they can make one on the 3DS and do better numbers? This has basically left Sony in a position to carry the Vita by themselves. If the Vita is gonna get good software it'll either be niche titles or Sony made ones.

Nintendo is struggling with the Wii U do to lack of software because why should a third party make a Wii U title when they can make one on the 360 / PS3 / PS4 ? XBO and do better numbers? This has basically left Nintendo in a position to carry the Wii U by themselves. If the Wii U is gonna get good software it'll either be niche titles or Nintendo made ones.

he made some good moves but its like a sports team that peaks under a certain coach. at some point you have to fire the coach and get new blood with new ideas in there. hell keep him as a consultant. even Sony had to drop the father of the Playstation Ken Kutaragi at one point.

If Nintendo were smart at all, they'd make a battle-arena type game on the Wii U that sycs with the handheld pokemon games and allows players to bring their Pokemon into a real-time coliseum and duke it out w/ other players. Imagine how many systems that would move.

Even if it just used the SSB engine or something, it'd be a massive hit.
