I admit I haven't read much about this case. I did hear about the story on NPR this morning.
Here is what I heard as possibly happening:
- The defense claims that this girl broke down his door and thats when he shot her.
- The prosecutor claimed that to be false because the door was still locked with the shotgun hole in it.
- The girl blood alcohol level was 3x over the legal limit which probably led to the crash
To be honest, I understand the fear its early in the morning and someone is violently banging on your door. Hell, this happened to me only a month ago where some folks tried to ask me to come in and use my phone so they "can call their friends" to find their apartment in the complex and I sternly said no and made it clear it wasn't happening. A few mins later they started banging on my door again which I guessmay have been out of taking offense for me treating them with suspicion. I admit I was a bit freaked out and told my girlfriend to get her cellphone and I grabbed a bat lol. Your home is your castle and there is a certain feeling of violation when folks threaten that.
However, at the same time, I'm not blasting folks through my front door. I'm using my brain and assessing the situation first. My guess is this dude is unfortunately the result of this right-wing fearmonging currently gripping the country where the gun is the first thing these people feel needs to be used to resolve conflict. He probably saw someone black outside his door, immediately thought "thug" and started shooting. Especially given the door was locked when police arrived.
