@Hathaway i know 2 scales and their chords. What can I do while I learn more chords and scales? I’m very slow at reading sheet music. I want to learn shyt on my own but I don’t see good resources online

I can't read music either. Never learned. I play by ear. Honestly man, it depends on how bad you want to learn. I spent years learning from youtube videos. I'll post what I told another breh on here :

Aight I was trolling with my first post in here, but I’m a musician..been playing low brass instruments since 99 when I started in middle school & I work with kids in the Atlanta area to get them prepared for college auditions.

Reading music is hard at first, but the more you do it, the easier it gets. I realized I was a beast in music my 9th grade year when it started to slow down for me.

Like we could be playing an uptempo song in the band, but it’s like I was able to read the music at a slow pace, like some Max Payne, RDR2 or GTA focus cheat ability.

Majority of music is in 4/4 time..just divide the notes in your head.

One my band directors taught us a trick to remember how to read music..different car brands have the same syllables as the notes you read on sheet music. I’ve been looking for it for the past 30 minutes but I can’t find it. If I do I’ll post it.

Real shyt. The legends from the 60's, 70's, 80's etc, were putting in WORK getting their shyt perfected. In the 60's, guys were leaving high school and meeting up on the block to sing doo-wop like the Temptations. The GAWD Smokey Robinson was a teenager learning to write songs, hooks for Motown. In the 70's & 80's, singers were being taught how to sing in churches. Hour upon hours of practice, refinement and mastery. Aretha, Whitney, Luther, etc. The greats were doing this shyt their entire lives before finding the spotlight.
and even after getting singed, some artists sat in development for 2-3 years before they really got to release an album. and when we moved past development in the late 80's/early 90's, A&R still polished TF outta them. a dude like diddy was not letting you debut without the right songwriters, producers, choreographers, and stylists making sure you had your shyt tight.

i personally believe the internet ruined artistry. yea it's great you don't have to wait on a label, at the same time, no one has to hone their craft, you can just ship some shyt straight to social media/streaming platforms and be on. dude start singing at 18 cuz he realizes he can't rap, turns around 18 months later dropping a full length :trash: album full of unrefined vocals and derivative lyrics (a la brent faiyaz)

I wish A&R would come back
These new artist need it
No stage presence
Disrespectful to fans
Just fukking awkward and with no personality
they are so bad at performing, vent about how much they hate performing and fame, have weird ass disaffected attitudes in interviews, they literally seem to hate the path they chose (SZA, Summer Walker cough cough)

This shyt is spot on
All of it. I don't even know if record labels even do Artist Development anymore. Shyt is definitely missed. Some of these nikkas they pulled straight off the street. nikkas stumbling over their words in interviews. Can't articulate their thoughts. Looked like they rolled right outta bed. I get we want to celebrate individuality and authenticity but there's a thin fukking line.

So much truth in this. Lyrics that are subtle yet direct and show the skill of the pen have been in decline for ages. Old tunes are classics because there is simply so much they can give and they provide a nourishment like your grams cooking.

Modern stuff is chewing gum with an intense hit for 3 minutes
and then a whole load of jaw flapping with nothing of substance present. Thing is its reflective of emotional resonance, intellect and awareness as well. That speaks volumes about the modern generation and the psychosocial hell they must exist in at that level of vibration due to being digital kids.

These days its all about the quick flip, instant hit, click, clack, boom, whats next? No development, no letting something cook. Nope. Just rushed products so that people don't forget about you. Little do they know the thing that creates an memorable aura is doing the exact opposite of the standard form for this generation.

nikka wrote a whole dissertation in disappearing ink on some “Now let’s discuss :myman:

This is the main point. Legacy. None of this shyt we ridin to today will be played 30 years from now. This shyt ain't no classics. Nothing on Beys new album will come on at my family reunion 35 years from now and make me wanna get up and dance on some "oooo shyt y'all young nikkas don't know nothing bout this". No lasting effect. Nothing. The microwave generation. They want everything quick fast and in a hurry. No substance.
I was wrong about this. Her recent album has grown on me alot more since posting this. Plastic Off the Sofa is a true gem. It's very contagious.
