I understand bitterness towards some of the big battles not living up to the hype, but guess what, shyt is a business now. You just have to come to grips with that. If you don't like big name battles just stick to Spit Dat Heat and the RBE leagues, if you only want to hear bars, then they have leagues for that. Smack/URL is about putting on events. Big names sell out venues.

Battle rap is no different than mainstream rap. You can either book Drake or you can book "Backpack rapper X". Yeah the latter may be more talented but he ain't bringing anywhere near the money Drake is. It's about what makes sense financially. So the days of those URL events in small rooms are over for the most part. Yeah they might run an event here and there, some PG joints, maybe a couple of smaller 300 capacity events but that is gonna be rare. No point in complaining about it. Just don't watch but battle rap is at it's most high in terms of popularity, way more than it was 5-6 years ago. It would be stupid to go backwards.

The guys here should have the proper expectations of how a big stage battle is gonna turn out by now. If you embrace the showmanship, you'll have more appreciation for it.

Yea all that business shyt makes sense and is all well and good until people finally realize that card after card after card of these big events is trash. And it will happen. Sooner than later. You think ole boy from Cali is about to make that trip again after a card that had maybe 1.5 battles that mattered or are rewatch-worthy? You can only live off the past for so long. Eventually, you have to actually provide a quality product again. And I'm not saying it's impossible for URL to do that, just that it's been a minute since they have or even seemed like they cared to.

Edit: And yeah, I'd hop on a plane for a SDH or RBE event. They have the best track records currently going.

Most fans enjoy the live experience. It's completely different in the building than on cam.

Yall gotta understand that we are hardcore fans. The casual fan enjoys these shyt. Those RvV Battles are gaining views daily & already passing 500k

The difference is when you go to a Drake concert you know what to expect. So if are a fan your going to get your moneys worth. If your not a fan you wont go.
With big name matchups its a suprise what you going to get. You might get a motivated clips vs rex or you might get a trash Verb vs Shine.
Imo thats not how its supposed to be. Rappers need to take their craft serious and be a guarantee for a solid performance

i'm still crossing my fingers that some big sponsors will eventually come into URL and allow them to do more small room battles, cause i think that would help a lot too. i wish there was a way to have an event weekend where one day is streamed in a small room and the next is people onstage, so lyricists and performers could both have their own venue. not likely but it would improve the quality of the battles...a small room even made Cassidy tolerable

I don't think that's necessarily true, bro. I just want two dudes who are willing to take shots at each other. That's why I could still enjoy K-Shine's performance at Nome 5. Verb is up there trying to write pretty sounding bars, but K-Shine is still getting it in with the knowledge that if he makes his opponent look worse, then he wins. And it's true. There'll be hardcore Verb fans who say "watch the footage" and point out certain lines and how the crowd slept and blah blah blah NONE of that shyt matters. The live battle is what happens at that time and it's all that matters. People who say "watch the footage", nah son go watch a battle in person if you want your opinion to matter, nerd

Come on fam, be reasonable. Didnt you expect more from Verb and Clips during NOME?
Isnt it always a suprise which Clips you going to get?

To be honest, I expected more but not much more. They haven't been putting on great performances for a long time now. I thought Verb would win but I thought it would be more because I don't think Shine is that good and I said Hollow would beat Clips for months. Only battle I really had high expectations for was Roc and Surf to be honest. I've learned to just expect average battles now, and if it's better be thankful.

How isn't it true though? when is the last time there was a great battle on a big stage before NOME 5 (Cause I think Surf and Roc is great and Official vs Jaz was extremely dope too). Not sure why you would expect differently when it's been like this for about 2 years now.

Internet fans are important and certainly help battle rap exist. But they didn't exist when Rex was rapping in the park. You weren't there, you were learning how to ride a bike or some shyt. So battle rap started without youtube, and it'll live on without youtube.

Last great battle on big stage was definitely Lux vs Calicoe, without a doubt.

And yeah, you're right, that's a long time ago. I'm in agreement with FreshAIG that the performances were sub par. But I don't think that's what battle fans are being sold. The product that they are going to see is the highest quality shyt, they're expecting rappers to take chances and really spit that shyt. Not just some safe, verbal acrobatics shyt. Dudes gotta be taking shots at each other or else battle rap's gonna become one long cypher. I think if there's complaints to be made, that ya, they should be directed at the rappers themselves. But if you were them, you'd probably do the same thing. Try to stay on by giving a good performance but not really go too crazy, just play it safe. It's a kinda weird situation. Because the fans want performances, but they don't understand that it's actually the lower-tier/mid-tier guys that are more likely to give them that.

Think Lux vs Miles. Lux was spitting real shyt because that was actually Lux back then. People talk about Lux hoodie rap like they do because he was raw back then. Now he's going through some weird life crisis and making all of us watch, I don't care about that shyt at all. But he can do all of that because there's an audience for it. So now Lux is still in battle rap. To me, that's a problem. Old dudes overstaying their welcome is what's wrong with society anyway. But you also gotta think alright, he's also a legend. How is battle rap supposed to treat their legends.

Idk, I just wanna see hungry dudes rap. That's it.

I feel you, but I hate the whole "overstaying your welcome thing". That's some dumb hip-hop/urban culture shyt, we can support the young hungry guys without needing to push the veterans off a cliff. That's one of the reasons why the music industry went to shyt, because everyone chased the dollar & 80's/early 90's voices were declared meaningless. How can anyone take battle rap seriously if we don't respect the architects? I have no problem with Mook & Lux trying to make some money off of a platform that they laid the groundwork for. Trust, URL won't go bankrupt booking them anyway.

Anyway, I say you just have to be judicious about what you support. It was cool for us to get the 1st Smack URL PPV, but next time around if you see multiple lazy battlers on the card, don't cop. I believe Spud34 attended the PG event. Something like that makes perfect sense, as those would be the battles he'd be more likely to enjoy than the big stage joints.

Rookies vs Vets + the PGs are providing a platform for the hungry guys to get through the door. And if the PPV's do well, we might see smaller venues. Smaller venues generally mean better battles. So I think we are on the right path, just as long as URL throws an event every two months at a minimum. I'm a little disappointed that none of the rookies from the RVV card were on NOME, but I think eventually those guys will get cycled in and some of the vets will be cycled out.
