I get what you mean, but my in-head logic is that we're witnessing the edge cases. Or to put it another way, I think how much we expect police or any adults to get involved comes down to how often we think the hand is possessing people and causing them to enact extreme violence.I hear you and I agree with your points. For some reason it just hit me hard in 'Talk to Me' because of phones and social media being so prevalent. I'll give you an example of where I think a horror film nailed it with present day technology. 'Smile' was so good in part because the characters were very intelligent in their use of real world tech. She's like "hey, this isn't right, this can't be a coincidence...look at all these other cases." The cop doesn't write it off as "you're crazy, miss" and forget about it. He assists her and goesknowing full well that something wild is going on and it should be investigated.
That's all I'm saying. I feel like when present day tech is introduced and we are to believe this is a modern real world setting, I just like seeing it utilized in a smart way.
I liked 'Talk to Me' for several reasons, those were just nitpicks.

Most people who take the hand get a thrill and move on, and anyone who hasn't been in the room to witness the hand is gonna assume it's just social media fukkery. Plus, the hand targets people with grief issues, so covering it up by blaming regular depression would make a lot of sense.
I assume that on the rare occasions that someone gets hurt, everyone fronts about what happened. The kids lie, the hand gets moved to a new circle of people in a different county, and the case gets wrapped up as a typical mental health breakdown.
What I mean is I still think most people would roll their eyes at "the magic hand possessed my friend and made them commit a violent act" and default to "that Mia girl was always weird, got depressed after her mom died, and lashed out violently after her father revealed the note." Even with the videos, we don't know how many of them are actually being shared or livestreamed as opposed to recorded and deleted after some crazy shyt goes down. The fun times with the hand might be the only ones posted.
That's me going very extra to try and logic it out though.
It's a cool flick. The kid actors were really good and it had that retro creepy feel. Also the movie takes place right down the street from me but it was wasnt filmed in Denver. I tell my kids whenever we drive by that neighborhood that's where the Grabber lives and their eyes get all wide lolPretty good trailer. I liked 'The Black Phone' as a concept and I felt the execution of it was real solid. I seen someone say online that it was too grimey to cover the mainstream but not gruesome enough for horror fans and I disagree with that.
I felt it was creepy and plenty violent...but that's me..
