Aye what the hell. I thought it was a joke but its coming from Deadline:dame:

Kenan Thompson’s AFA Developing Reimagining Of ’80s Slasher ‘Sleepaway Camp’

Kenan-Thompson-Sleepaway-Camp-Poster-1983.jpg

AFA, the production company and talent incubator of Kenan Thompson and Johnny Ryan Jr., has acquired remake rights to Sleepaway Camp, the cult classic ’80s slasher from writer-director Robert Hiltzik.

Specifics as to AFA’s take on the material are under wraps for now. But AFA has placed Hiltzik back at the helm to direct from his own script. While for decades, Hiltzik and his wife have been approached for rights to the franchise, they’ve held out in hopes of a scenario where they can be involved in revitalizing the franchise.
In a statement to Deadline, Hiltzik said, “I am both thrilled and humbled to be working with AFA on the reimagined Sleepaway Camp. Though I have been approached by several companies regarding the remake of Sleepaway Camp, only AFA has shared my vision and is excited to have me helm the film, therefore preserving the integrity of the original film for the fans, as well as introducing Sleepaway Camp to a whole new generation. Be prepared for a new member of the Sleepaway Camp family.”

Thompson told us, “Excited to work with the original genius Robert and bring back to life a camp classic!!!”

I worry about remakes in general but especially something like 'Sleepaway Camp' because they are so sleazy and the people behind it need to capture that 80's sleaze. :russ:

I'm just worried because the og writer/director's last movie was Return to Sleepaway Camp and that movie was fukking horrible.

I watched 'Maniac Cop'. It's funny because I'm almost certain I've seen parts of the sequels on like Cinemax at 2am or some shyt and I'd watch like a few minutes and be like alright this is too much for me right now but I never bothered to watch the original. The concept itself is intriguing because you have a police officer who is basically a serial killer, some people fall victim because of the trust they have in law enforcement. The issue is more the execution here, it's cheesy as hell and I get that it's the 80s so that's expected but it's just not made well enough for me to ever revisit.

Alright yall, concussion has passed. I'm ready to start us setting up the 2025 Halloween 31 Days of Halloween list, with contributions from all of yall.

Here's last year's list:
31 Horror Movies for October
1. Triangle (Prime)
2. The Loved Ones (Paramount+)
3. Salem's Lot 2024 (Max)
4. Be My Cat: A Film for Anne (Tubi)
5. VHS Beyond (Shudder)
6. *Choose your own*
7. Don't Go in the House (Tubi, Youtube)
8. Cure (Internet Archive)
9. Masque of the Red Death(Pluto/Apple TV+)
10. The Eyes of My Mother (Max)
11. Henry Portait of a Serial Killer (Peacock)
12. Curse of Chucky (Netflix)
13. *Choose your own*
14. Junk (2000) (Youtube)
15. Detention (2011) (Tubi)
16. Sleepaway Camp (Peacock)
17. The Skeleton Key(Peacock/Apple TV+)
18. The Witch (Max)
19. Brain Damage 1988 (Tubi)
20. *Choose your own*
21. Audition (Tubi)
22. J. D.'s Revenge(Tubi/Brown Sugar/Prime)
23. Dead Silence (Tubi)
24. Sinister (Max)
25. World War Z (Paramount Plus)

27. *Choose your own*
28. 28 Days Later
29. Black Christmas (Tubi)
30. The Shining(MAX/Apple TV+)
31. John Carpenter's Halloween

I've historically left Fridays as "Choose your own" to leave some freedom and ease of use for people. The rest has generally just been a free-for-all. Every year, there are some brand new movies that drop. I don't have a list of the new stuff, so please let me know if yall know of any new movies that are dropping in October and we can throw those on as fresh viewing (I know we're getting a VHS Halloween).

Otherwise, quote my latest post with your picks. Try not to pick too many at once, to leave room for the rest of the posters. But also, don't be shy about adding picks, we've had a few years where I had to fill in the last few slots last minute because we didn't get enough suggestions. I also tend to aim for no repeats from the previous year (not counting the obvious Halloween on the 31st).

If you have picks, just do me a favor and quote my latest post with the list. Add your pick to whichever open date you'd like, and whenever you can, please include which streamer is carrying it to make it easier for us to find and watch it. It's a great chance to introduce slept-on horror movies or revisit something you like with a crew to discuss the flicks with.

My kickoff pick is a microbudget gem that I've mentioned a few times before. It incorporates some found footage elements, and has a bit of an anthology vibe since it tells three stories in the same house.

1. Beezel (Tubi/Prime)

So, I have a mini staycation because I hit my head and needed stitches. So I marathoned some recommended found footage horror. Quick thoughts:

- Horror in the High Desert 2 improves on just about everything from the original, without exactly changing much. I appreciate that. Dutch Mariach took the strengths from the original and stuck to those. This one gives more of the actual found footage scenes, and splices them throughout the witness accounts, which helps a LOT. It also gives better explanations for how people get the footage and clues. There's one particular dash cam scene that I REALLY liked.

Now, I still have some quibbles about the victims not being established through enough footage (too much tell, not enough show); and I really wish the lore about the killers gave us more bread crumbs to build theories from. But this is a big step up imo.

- Godforsaken takes a premise we've seen in horror before, but gives it the found footage twist and has some fun with that.

Basically, a funeral turns to chaos when the dead person hops out of the casket and runs away. She starts showing up to people, and weirdness ensues that engulfs the entire community. It's clearly on a budget, and the acting is very "found footage crew." But there are some clever plot turns and fun moments scattered throughout the whole thing.

My biggest complaint is that it could be 15 mins shorter without any harm to the plot or big moments. But I respect the "we're gonna go for it" approach they took by the final act.

- Howard's Mill is a mockumentary that comes with a pretty cool mystery and unfolds like an investigation.

A film crew goes to interview a man about his wife going missing, but it's not much of a case since he's an obvious suspect. That changes when the crew realizes that people have vanished mysteriously from this same area for decades. So, they start to investigate further and eventually clues that take the case in a bunch of different directions. It comes to a really interesting conclusion!

On the downsides, it's not scary or even particularly tense. It's just a really interesting mystery that unfolds in stranger and stranger discoveries. But it kept me interested from start to finish, and it felt realistic in a Lake Mungo kinda way.

- Haven't watched yet, but I'm about to jump into Savageland next.
first off, hope you good from that injury but thanks to your post. I’m a found footage horror dude so reading this made me watch the first horror in the high desert that I never heard of and it kept me highly entertained. About to watch part 2 but had to give you a shoutout. Gonna check out your recommendations all day today!

:salute:to a fellow Found Footage fan! I feel like found footage is a particularly oversaturated genre, so I try to shout out anything noteworthy or unique that I come across. I've gotta shout out this old youtube video that I've been using to get suggestions.

And many thanks for the well wishes.

@storyteller I'm going to select 'Terrifier 2' it's up on Prime Video. People should probably watch the first one before watching this one but I am selecting part 2 because I think it's the best one in the series as far as lore, storytelling and directing. It's one of the best uses of a very small budget that I've seen in a while. If you told me it cost $20M I'd have believed you.

31. John Carpenter's Halloween

It's nice to hear you're doing well. I've been bingeing trashy 80s horror movies so I won't recommend we watch them for October :mjlol:

I'd like to add 2 movies for next month.

I read a list of underappreciated horror movies and Messiah of Evil 1974(Tubi, Plex, Pluto) was on there. I see someone else on my letterbox has it on their watchlist.

I'm going to add another violent movie to the list

21. Ichi the Killer 2001(Tubi, Philo, YouTube Subscripton)
I've been holding off on watching this for awhile and am interested after rewatching Audition last year. I see a few people have it on their letterbox watchlist.

Many thanks fam. I had Ichi on my shortlist for a Japanese horror addition, and I was thinking Art the Clown may be overdue for a yearly slot somewhere in October. Messiah of Evil will be a first-time watch for me!
