The year 3030
I didn't really think about how bad Until Dawn's gimmick would hamstring it until I was halfway through the movie. In any horror movie, we get annoyed at dumb horror movie logic, but helps add tension since characters are flirting with death. But in Until Dawn, they have a bunch of tries to make it through one night and everyone has to die before the next night starts.

So, characters have to be extra stupid, repeatedly, and there are no stakes to any of it. Once one of them dies, you're just watching for how the rest will get taken out. None of the plot advancement is earned; at one point, it takes a girl's psychic powers to tell everyone to check the top drawer on the only desk in a room. The goofy logic gets to the point that there's no tension.

But the kills are pretty damned good. They're gory, over the top, and generally entertaining. As pure popcorn fare, it's not the worst thing to drop. But it's in that "so bad it winds up being goofy fun" lane that movies like The Bye Bye Man and Tarot occupy, where it's best served as training wheels for horror newcomers.
:russ: that shyt when she pointed at the table was god damn retarded

Plus there was a director cut or pre re lease cut, had more violence.

They tried to do a Carrie vs Jason.
yep. They fukkED this movie up. The MPAA were on Paramount's azz at the time and this is the most edited F13 film ever. None of the kills had gore and it's a goddamn rated R film. luckily they were saved on vhs and later released as extras in the box sets.

I gave Shudder's latest drop a shot, Dead Mail, and the relentless mid of it was overwhelming.

An ominous help note finds its way to a 1980s post office, connecting a dead letter investigator to a kidnapped keyboard technician.

They hit you with a great opening sequence, and capture that "modern movie with a vintage style" vibe to a tee. Unfortunately, I found everything else about the movie to be pretty unappealing. There's some world-building going on, but it's boring stuff and they fast forward through most of it.

The most interesting character in the movie gets killed off too soon, and everyone else is vanilla. I can't tell you a single personality trait of anyone except for one dude who listens to terrible keyboard music that's loud and obnoxious whenever we hear it. It's like the score was picked out to purposefully annoy us.

There aren't real scares. Tension is replaced by awkwardness. The kills are lame, and it makes no sense that the killer gets away with any of it. The scariest moments are the monotonous bits where we realize that no one in this movie does anything remotely interesting ever.

In fairness, the performers do their best with limited options to show personality. This was clearly a labor of love, but it didn't land with me in the slightest. I kinda hated it.

3.5 outta 10

Shudder been fukking up lately with their original content, but it's so cheap that it's worth having for a lifetime.

Yeah, even when the content goes light, it's worth having for the library it keeps. It's original stuff is hit or miss, but you get hits once in awhile and shows like the Last Drive-In are worth it for as cheap as the subscription runs.

HBO never owned the rights to Tales From The Crypt, that why it's not on Max. After the show ended, they tried to transition into movies.

Nothing wrong with the first one. (Some of the cgi in the beginning doesn't age well)

Now on Starz, as well as the shytty second movie.
