Day 3: The Mist

tumblr_orafox5Jcl1rrkahjo2_540.gif

Well....don't bring a knife to a gun/mist fight, brehs :skip:

I enjoyed this, even with the gut punch near the end. Darabont didn't spare a thing. Yeah, some of the effects were wonky, but when they work---they really work---the grotesque spider scene in the pharmacy for example.

I like how they really play to the uncertainty and fear that something like The Mist brings, not just from the supernatural/monsters aspect, but how people move in times of chaos as well. And as usual, us being our own agents of catastrophe.

This one had a little bit of everything :ehh:

This randomly came on TV not too long after so I let it play. Aside from leaning to being slightly over the top in some aspects, sacrificing some of the raw creepiness packaged in the story, it's still very much a fun watch. The Loser's Club especially shines with their chemistry and just overall experience.

fukk me I have some catching up to do with posting my thoughts in here. So Let me start with 'Beezel.' I enjoyed this. The creepiness and VHS style in the way a lot of it was shot kept me engaged and on my toes. I think I enjoyed the first half more than the second half because it was more of a mindfukk for me but regardless this was a pretty good time.

'Terrifier 2' I've posted my thoughts on this quite a bit on these boards, I think I've grown to like this the more I see it. To me the gore is cool for what it is and I'm impressed by the practical effects but if that's all the movie was then I wouldn't shower it with much praise at all. It's the other scenes like the Clown Cafe sequence that really amp up the creativity and the essence of horror. The added lore is a nice tough and Lauren LaVera is a very good final girl actress. It might be a bit too long at basically 2 1/2 hours but it's clearly the best of the series for me and might be one of my favorite slashers in years now. I also love the way it's shot adding the grain in post to make it have more of an 80s feel.

For my free choice this evening me and ol' girl watched 'Together' starring Alison Brie and Dave Franco. This got a little repetitive in parts but overall it was an interesting take on this body horror subgenre and the acting performances were well done. It many ways I felt like this reminded me of something like 'Cabin Fever' which I've always fukked with and the lore was engaging enough. I don't know if I loved the reveal or not, I'd probably have to watch again to fully appreciate it.

Finished watching The Craft earlier. Solid flick. Wish I could throw Fairuza Balk into the Lazarus Pit because I think she would make a fantastic Harley Quinn. That damn batshyt smile. Rachel True was 30 here and she looked like she was in her early-early 20s tops. Still looks good to this day. Further evidence of black not crackin’. :whew:

Dug the vibe though and I can see why it’s a comfort, time capsule flick for many. This movie is PEAK 90s, lol. The soundtrack, the grunge/goth teen angst, and fashion pieces jump out and it’s no shock it was a hit. Encapsulates the pleasantries (and cheesiness) of the decade in a similar way as Scream and The Faculty. I think this is also where that Charmed show got a lot of its inspiration from now that I look back.

Plot isn’t a game-changer, but I liked the whole “careful what you wish for” morality tale it had going for it. Definitely can see myself coming back to this one.
Facts she would’ve been perfect to play Harley & Rachel True :wow:

I'll still be watching some horror that's not on the list if I can. 'A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors' is up there for the best in the series. I always loved the haunted house aesthetic it utilizes for much of the dream world. It was a cool spin on the dream world to have all of these teens who've been terrorized by Freddy try to team up and battle him together. Shout out to Larry Fishburne as he's credited in this, right before he'd go on to 'Deep Cover' and 'Boyz N' the Hood'. The ending to this is still pretty shocking for me as well.

VHS is out…. What’s the verdict? :lupe:
I made it part of my marathon:
31 Days of Horror Marathon 2025 - Day Three:
1. Beezel (Tubi/Prime)
2. Terrifier 2 (Amazon Prime)
3. *Free Choice* (VHS: Halloween)

Here's quick thoughts for each short:
Coochie Coochie Coo - I liked the haunted house vibe and the visuals on this one were creepy in an uncanney valley sort of way. It's chaotic and doesn't explain much, but the madness of it all works really well to set the tone.

Ut Supra Sic Infra - This was my favorite of the bunch. It's cleverly set up and has really dope visual effects while also hitting all its marks quickly and effectively. I wasn't shocked when to find out that the director for this is Paco Plaza, the man behind the Rec movies.

Fun Size - This one's by the creator of "Too Many Cooks," an absolute legend of an Adult Swim one-shot show (or more of just a title track but it has to be seen to be understood). It's batshyt crazy in the best way, combining the AS fratboy humor with some really gory stuff. It's the kind of fun and gnarly combination that great VHS shorts are made from.

Kidprint - I feel like it's impossible to have so many shorts in an anthology without having a dud or two. This was my dud. It tries to cram too much story into its short runtime, which winds up making the story a bit of a mess, detracting from some cool skin-grating effects.

Home Haunt - I feel like this one might be most people's favorite short from this VHS. It's a literal haunted house walk-through where the haunts all come to life. That gives it a diversity of creatures and kills that we speedrun through, and the effects live up to the chaotic setup.

Overall:
What keeps this VHS from breaking through to the top of the series is that none of the features are truly standout. Home Haunt and Ut Supra Sic Infra are really good, but I can definitely think of five shorts that I'd put above them. They'd probably break into the bottom of my top ten. On the bright side, there's only one short that I didn't like, and the consistent quality makes this a good VHS film.

One last note, it irks me that in spite there typically only being one foreign director per VHS movie, they always seem to go above and beyond. Safe Haven, Parallel Monsters, The Subject, and God of Death are quick to my mind as great shorts in the VHS series and Ut Supra Sic Infa is yet another standout.

For the pick your own i watched The Toxic Avenger. :camby:wasn't my type of comedy and too much cgi. Therr wasn't much charm and everything felt too safe. They didn't need to go as sleazy as the first movie but they tried to make it too serious even though I do agree with the message.

Deadstream is such a fun found footage movie, with an MC who's so desperate for views that his refusal to run away actually kinda works. There are a bunch of gags that I get a kick out of, like the dude using Duct tape for everything and his goofy camera names.

The best part is how it hits all the necessary ingredients for a good found footage recipe. The MC tells us the lore of the haunted house while we get oriented to the key locations. Then things quickly shift from false scares and light fare to straight-up chaos. It’s a very similar order of operations to Asylum movies I love (Grave Encounters and Gonjiam), but this one's got Deadites and a haunted cabin...it's one step removed from Found Footage Evil Dead.

I watched Nightmare 3 last year and it had been a long time because I don't know how I forgot this scene
