Both the absolute line and the new ultimate line work best as short runs.
I know the status quo isnt the most exciting but it books ends really good runs. The issue right now with X-men is they don’t want to just go back to the status quo and instead they are playing with the corpse of a great Krakoa run. A return to the school or maybe taking over a town would have all been better than what they are doing.
I'd say both (absolute and ultimate) could work best as the status quo but with a definitive end (which doesn't have to be short or around the corner), and that the current status quo sucks because it lacks a definitive end. Creative refuses to let it reach such things (logical conclusions), opting to always reset the clock and stunting intended growth or any bad ass ideas writers have. I'd say the books have good runs despite the status quo, but it's now few and far between, and ironically they are the runs that attempt to change the status quo lol
There's this fear of OMG if we don't keep Peter Parker's 70 year history canon forever while locking him in as a late 20s dweebfor the next 50 years then the world will end!
I mean, you said it: the status quo isn't the most exciting... well, what the hell am i reading comics for if it's not to be excited about the bullshyt?

I'd also say the Krakoa run ended like shyt (due to creative butchering Hickman's idea), and ironically the next thing they did post-Krakoa... was have Cyclops team take over a town lol
Granted i threw the book and series back in the dumpster shortly after, so whatever has happened since, idk
