Yeah...I think I do recall that he was telling someone the story when they show him shooting the double.
I always rolled with the theory of the machine working and Angier having to knowingly murder a double in the tank, but this new explanation is feasible as well.

The other theory of him committing that and having the double get the glory is feasible too, but I think he was too ego-driven to let someone else get the prestige....and he had all those memories. Wouldn't have made enough sense.
