Yeah...I think I do recall that he was telling someone the story when they show him shooting the double.

I always rolled with the theory of the machine working and Angier having to knowingly murder a double in the tank, but this new explanation is feasible as well.

The other theory of him committing that and having the double get the glory is feasible too, but I think he was too ego-driven to let someone else get the prestige....and he had all those memories. Wouldn't have made enough sense.

Crying with sincerity about how he himself made sacrifices, by not knowing if he would end up being the one on stage or in the tank drowning. that was the greatest one of them all, playing the trick on the audience. Even at the end Angier tried to fool Borden

The Double would have the same memories and wouldn't himself know that he was a double. The movie never explains if the double is the one in the machine or the one being transported.

Even if you want something to go over the audience's head, you still need to have it be displayed in the film although not necessarily explained/revealed. Also being purposely dishonest within the story without clueing the audience in would be ridiculous, and this is what you're suggesting.

at no point did you see the things happen real time with teslas machine. You don't get some wide angle view so you know for sure whats happening. This is at the heart of magic. Its ALL about tricking you

the last words at the end of the movie are all you need to realize there is more to it than what you "see"

the movie is ambiguous for that reason. The idea that the machine actually makes doubles is ludicrous and doesnt make sense BUT you dont want to believe that its just some simple illusion so you go the whole movie thinking tesla is some genius when his only real creation was alternating current They really had you when Tesla said:
