So basically some of these 6cert, 6 figure Coli brehs could very well be richer than a lot of ur Music Crush Monday’s in the industry.
Because artists already aren’t making money off records sales due to only getting pennies for each record they make, but now 360 deals also cut into the other money they could make off shows and events.
Meanwhile the record label doesn’t pay for marketing and event booking or really anything beyond creation of the record and initial advances. And artists gotta dip into that to make sure their shyt is “poppin”

All that fake flossing and fronting. At this point they just working for fame hoping it will lead to profit instead of being the direct recipients of the profit generated from their craft.:weirdo::weirdo::weirdo:

So these artists literally outchea getting paid in YouTube likes and Coli daps. Do the million dollar cars and cribs even belong to them?!

Id be cheap as hell as an artist.

Why can’t these multimillionaire musicians come together and form their own record label to at least give better terms to artists?

The same way a lot of revolutionaries overthrow corrupt governments, only to largely repeat the same top down exploitation and corruption.

People will almost always default to ain't ish, if you let them.

It takes one in a million to stay true to ideals when power and wealth beckon.

@Booksnrain , there's a new independent artist I've been on a lot lately from San Francisco named Larry June. He raps the standard ig'nant shyt but his other angle/gimmick is mixing in bars about paying his bills on time, eating healthy, making smoothies, and doing outdoor activities like hiking and bike riding. Check out his merch page, he sells Larry June branded hoop shorts, grocery totes, mason jars, and aprons among other things. He even has his own line of orange juice lol. Screw balling off an advance, this is what setting yourself up for long term success is about, and it comes from having to/being able to think out the box without the will of greedy label execs being imposed upon you.

He's probably doing better financially than 90% of big label artists tbh, and he seems a helluva a lot happier too

We need our own record label, music law schools, marketing agencies, booking agencies.

So much raw talent creating the entire soundtracks of human life—only getting paid peanuts.

And of course I’m not even sure I wanna consider the racial side to this b/c we influence the most musically...but barely getting shyt for it.:wow::mjcry:

You don't need none of that - all you need to do is read those papers they want you to sign all fast,
and know who you're making deals with.



The stories are out here and have been out here. If people don't know by know, it's because they don't want to.


Since about 1965 or so, if you was Black or your music was "Black", you was probably signed to Motown, Epic, Atlantic, a smaller label affiliated to those (like Stax), or an independent. All record companies had a personality- the best thing for an artist to know was if they fit that personality. Then, the artists who didn't get robbed are the artists who got robbed before in previous deals and learned better. That's it and that's all.


If you really wanna see how raw the game is, watch the doc about Toni Tony Tone - those niccas are relatives and ended up like that. Bring a lunch, because it's long...but it's a good encapsulation of the music business.

labels dont come around until you've already found a fan base.

At the end of the day, record labels take the lion's share of the profits because they take the lion's share of the risks.

For every J. Cole or Kendrick Lamar that sells millions of records there are 1000 Desiigners and Vic Mensas who flop aggressively despite 100s of thousands of dollars in marketing and prime placements on albums and commercials.

The truth of the matter is, most people don't have the expendable income to spend 6 to 8 hours a day in the studio for months at a time to craft an album. Producers don't make beats for free, studios dont stay in business by letting artists record for free, Bills have to be paid, children have to be fed, families have to be taken care of.

That's why the game took a turn towards the hustler/rapper archetype of the 90s. These men came into the game with the money to finance their own projects and marketing. They just teamed up with the labels for distribution. They got better deals because the label had less risk involved in promoting these artists.

The bright side is that truly talented artists that stand the test of time can power through their first deal and come back to the negotiating table with much greater leverage and gain a larger slice of the profits because marketing is less of an issue when you're already a superstar.
