This is a problematic perspective. So if someone falsely accuses you of rape and costs you your job, reputation, etc., you should just take it on the chin for the greater good? That is a ridiculous stance for someone to take who is not affected by the action. The person who lied is the one caused the damage, not the one who decided to press charges back. Most rape cases lack evidence in the first place. The odds of someone even having enough proof to launch that type of attack would have to be in clear cases. I've thought about this topic a lot and I don't like your stance (even though it's the popular one).It doesn't even matter if they can prove they lied. They prosecute people for calling in fake bomb threats but i have yet to hear about someone who sees an actual bomb hesitate to call the bomb squad....i cant think of anyone who sees a suspicious device say.."ehh im just gonna leave it..i dont want to get in trouble"

There are limits to free speech. You're allowed to slander someone, but you can also be held civilly liable if proven to be slander. Not really rocket science to expect someone who has a brand and claims to be innocent protecting that brand by threatening suit against those allegedly defaming his character.
