It's necessary for the bus routes to be long because the city is so spread out. No one wants to transfer from bus to bus to bus just to go 18 miles in a straight line. Metro just needs to worry about on time performance. If the bus shows up on time people will ride. Metro has a reliability problem.

Interested in hearing what causes the reliability problems. I stay on the NW and I have to drive up a portion of Tidwell to get to work. Its normal for me to see a bus just parked on the street near a convenient store like it doesn't have a schedule to adhere to.

Not sure if you read through the entire thread but what is your opinion regarding the metrorail line. I think there should be a line that runs parallel to each major highway, and loop(now that we have 3 of them) for that matter which would help with the congestion in the city.

Metro is full of shytty drivers. The worst of them are old black males. Outside of rush hour I'd say 90% of bus routes have enough running time built into their schedules to have a reliable schedule.

Metro started building rail lines about 15 years ago. Three lines in that time, including a six year period where not a shovel of dirt was overturned, is somewhat impressive. We'd be a lot further along if we started back in the 70s as was planned. Republican politicians have cock blocked Metro rail funding for decades. We needed that University Line but white NIMBYs killed it. I never understood how public opposition to a highway means jack shyt but the dumb fukks in Afton Oaks killed the most viable rail line.

People are moving to Texas because of the low cost of living, cheap rent and McMansions.

That was 5 - 10yrs ago. Rent is creeping up, more apartments and master planned neighborhoods are popping up and commutes are getting longer.

O&G is taking advantage of the acreage on Beltway 8 North between i-10 and 59, what you see being built around it? New homes $300k and up, new apts, and all types of strip centers.
This doesn't apply much for Dallas, but people in Houston need to keep a close eye on the O&G industry. With a bbl of oil hovering around 40$ a lot of those nice 300 k houses could end up being with a lot less if the current climate persist. Remember these developments were planned when oil was 80 to 100 $.

If things don't start moving up by the end of the year, you will start seeing a record number of foreclosure in the Houston Metro area .

Not at the current price of gas. Plus the convenience of less travel time among other things>

I really don't think Public Transportation will become valuable to the city unless more focus is put on trains instead of the bus lines. There should be a rail line that runs parallel to all the major highways.

Hell no. You make to much damn sense.......Why would they invest in something that makes that kind of common sense. Way to smart of and idea. :francis:

You right though.

Until then, hopefully they get that high speed rail poppin soon between the major metros, that would increase the liveability factor. Here is the most up to date thing I've seen on it Planned high-speed rail line won't come downtown

Medical and IT are big too and go hand in hand so its still people willing to buy those houses but not like O&G guys.

I saw an article a few weeks back saying River Oaks is already feeling the pain. We knew it was coming but not for this long. How Houston's richest neighborhood is paying the price for cheap oil
A few years ago they was pushing big SUVs, Benzs, and huge houses. Now they're complaining in the comment section everytime someone praises low gas prices (which are climbing back up just in time for memorial day)

River Oaks is fine they got long bread, generational wealth.

I work for one of the big boys( oil major) everybody is nervous, trust me. People have been reapplying for positions they've held for 20 plus years. Hopefully things turn around, but after talking to the people in the know, they're expecting a rough 2016.

I can only imagine being surrounded by transplants from Cali and NYC. They always brag about their home city or state despite them moving.

This is exactly how it is in Collin and Denton County(northern suburbs of Dallas).
