it's easy to just say this, but raw amount of people to take care of has to outpace a supply of money that actually gets spent correctly

Have you ever heard of a YouTube channel called vlogbrothers? John Green (the writer of "The Fault In Our Stars") has a video on this channel explaining why health insurance is so expensive in the United States, and why other developed countries have better quality healthcare, despite spending less than we do as a percentage of their GDP.
There's also another vlogbrothers-associated channel called Healthcare Triage. It's presented by an actual doctor, and has a series of videos detailing how health insurance works in the US, UK, Netherlands, and other countries.
