the problem is that ya'll are focusing on "tech"

the world isn't just microchips.

Tech is just sexy right now because its seem as some great democratizer.

Theres tons of less "attractive" STEM jobs that pay just as well if not more and are waiting for applicants.

Dudes fall in love with the "wear jeans and hoodies to work with free food" attitude and think thats the only life for themselves.
Wrong.

I'm going to have to disagree with you. There are non-tech roles in tech companies also. 5 million+ people are enrolled in the tech industry. How can you have it in you to diminish the value-add of the tech industry?

I disagree because this is just saying that working HR at google still means you're working at tech.

You're not.

You're not even contributing to the core business of the company at that point. You're doing business admin work. Which is ultimately more replaceable and non-essential than the people who INNOVATE.

Working at IBM doesn't mean you get to create shyt.

Exactly. Face-palm away

Working in business development in a cubicle isn't the same as innovating in new product categories or serving as a core competency employee.

Promote support roles for minorities in tech industries brehs :troll:

This is PRECISELY why I get in arguments with @Poitier over this shyt.

There has to be less of a focus on entertainment as a means of generating wealth and autonomy in the black community.

Essentially 95% of black millionaires in this country is in entertainment.
It would of at least been justified if they used the money for black businesses but alas they dont....

certs are not stem degrees, and have very little to do with silicon valley

as a non-Cert.....non-STEM field person........ this confuses me...... explain ... :lupe: :patrice: ....does certs not have to do with computer science/software???

I am looking to learn coding....this site has brainwashed me :wow:.... (front end stuff and then Python for GIS)...what category is that??

certs are just tests that you pass that let you work is an IT person, an IT person is basically the help desk and the people that make sure computers and networks in an office are working, they can work anywhere since all offices have networks and computers, IT guys have nothing to do with with silicon valley

technically speaking you dont have to go to school to get certs, you just have to pass the tests

a STEM degree is an actual bachelors, master or PHD in Math or Science from a university, very different than a cert

using a car as an analogy, your local mechanic would be the guy with certs, he may or may not have gone to school, but he knows how to fix things

in this analogy the person that designed the car wouldbe the person with a STEM degree, they have a degree in mechanical engineering or something and they MAKE the cars (as opposed to fixing)

so people in silicon valley are people (mostly with high level STEM degrees) that MAKE the computers, people with certs are the people that fix and maintain computers, so mixing up guys with certs and people in SV is like mixing up the mechanic at a local shop with car designers at GM or BMW

so bottom line i guess would be dont confuse your local mechanic with a car designer

the analogy does break down when it comes to programming, the programmer can be somebody with no degree or somebody with a degree

programmers (ie software) have their own hierarchy cuz you have programmers and then you have software engineers and then there are systems engineers.....it gets complicated...

for programmers you can get a degree in computer science (a STEM degree) or you can go certificates at what are called coding schools or you can just teach yourself

if you want to get into programming and dont want to spend 4 years getting a computer science degree, i would look into coding schools, they last weeks and apparently people do get hired off them
