:mjcry: i need an egg substitue. egg's are so damn easy for protein intake when one is bulking
What You Need
  • ½ small yellow onion
  • ½ red bell pepper, diced
  • 1 carton firm non-GMO organic tofu, drained
  • 2 Tablespoons Earth Balance vegan butter spread
  • 1 green onion, sliced fine
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 Tablespoon soy sauce or liquid aminos
  • 2 Tablespoons nutritional yeast
  • ½ tsp turmeric
  • 1 Roma tomato, chopped small
  • ½ tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
  • fresh ground black pepper and salt to taste
How to Do It
  1. Saute onion and pepper in vegan butter for about 1 minute (use a non-stick pan for best results).
  2. Break up tofu into large crumbles with your hands into a bowl and add to onion mixture, sauteing an additional 5 minutes until vegetables are tender. Stir often to mix flavors.
  3. Add remaiing ingredients, then reduce heat to medium and allow to cook 5-7 minutes more. Add more oil if needed (but using a non-stick pan can cut fat in half and reduce calories).
  4. Serve hot with hash browns, fruit, toast or grits.
Extras
To reproduce the smell of eggs, use Kala Namak (black salt) vs. regular tables salt. Black salt has a sulfury smell and really makes the tofu taste like scrambled eggs. You can find it at Indian (Asian) grocers and most health food stores.

dude
I pre chop or process the onion/green onion/pepper/tomato mix (then store in fridge or freezer)
then when I am ready to cook
I heat the vegan butter (sometimes I use olive oil) and while I put the seasoning mix (tumeric/pepper flakes/garlic/onion/nutritional yeast) together into a small bowl (which you can prepare ahead of time too)
I let the veggies cook for that minute
once that is ready, i literally crumble the tofu right into the pan. I break off big chunks, squeeze out the water, and then squish it into chunks right into the pan
while that cooks for 5 minutes I finish my season mix setup if necessary
then toss the seasoning unto the tofu homogeneously then mix well with a spoon
then add soy sauce

that's it! done!
If you fukk it up once, you won't fukk it up twice, it's so easy
I like to add a1 steak sauce to mine though:noah:

Plus you can get healthy saturated fats from palm oil, coconut oil, and shredded coconut(flakes).

I've been getting some fire vegan recipes from youtube sites like worldofrandomstuff and the sweetest vegan

Worldofrandomstuff got recipes for days. She has a jerked tofu recipe that's :ohlawd:

If you want a meatier texture make sure to cop the firm tofu. Silken tofu can be used for substitute smoothies, ice creams, cream cheese, and protein shakes.

I thought tofu was another food that was bad for you in the long run ???

-----

unrelated: i've found the best recipes by simply using stumbleupon.com. i search for vegan and vegetarian but in all honesty, most recipes can be made into vegan dishes once you get the basics of cooking without meat down. It really just takes determination and an open mind.

The extreme raw vegans denounce soy because they swear it's gmo, estrogenic, and causes weight gain. The literature is out there on soy and it dispels those myths. Nothing wrong with soy as long as it is non gmo and in moderation.

Good looks on the websites. I will check them out later

The main thing I've heard against soy is that it was a poverty crop never meant for consumption. I personally don't have a problem with it, just figured the folks reading the thread deserve an alternate perspective.

People said that about the tomato and mushroom too. Asian and Indian folk been consuming soy and soy derivatives for thousands of years. Why haven't they denounced eating soy? It is cheap, a complete protein on par with animal meat, and full of benefits. Ignore the mudslinging between the plant eating industry and the meat industry. Find your own way

A lot of excellent plant based food sources have similar connotations of poverty, you can attach similar stigma to most legumes/beans. In cultures all over the world, the wealthy would consume meat and animal protein in a larger proportion than beans/plant proteins, so that's where those perceptions come from.

I am on board but how bad will it take a hit on my wallet.

Like people have said in here, it's actually cheaper if you can cook. The key is to buy your staple proteins and starches in bulk. Big bags of dried beans / lentils are cheap, healthy and satisfying. Same with rice. The key is to avoid corporate products and 'fake' meat garbage that's designed for profit margins and full of additives and trash...

Ahh, that makes sense! On a side note, as a drinker, I can't believ I have to ask if my beer is vegan. :beli:

I drank newcastle for far too long without realizing animal fat was part of the process.

I'm in. This year I'm gonna make an active change in my diet. Cheese is gonna be hard though. I might relapse. Red meat is no problem. Might take a while for me to ditch poultry though.

No need to rush to the vegan lifestyle. Work your way up. Some (lacto) vegetarians consume dairy. Eventually your tastebuds will adapt to the natural foods and crave it, and you will let the dairy go. It just won't taste the same anymore and prolly disgust you lol.

If your approach to plant driven diets is primarily from a cruelty / protectionist standpoint, you will always run into dilemma like this :mjcry:

The sad fact is that tons of things in our society require animal products and/or labor to create. Husbandry is a part of the human experience. The best we can do is minimize our impact whenever we have the option :mjcry:
