True. George Clinton was from NJ, but funk music derives from down south. Most funk, 70s RnB, Soul came from down south. Alot of them up North were doing Southern music. Guys like Isaac Hayes/Stax Records, that Memphis influence had alot of influence on Westcoast music. Westcoast music in general sounds like southern music. Alot of those early funk and rnb acts in LA originally came from Louisiana, Texas, Mississppi, etc. Alot of them also came from the midwest like the Ohio Players, Bootsy, The Isley's etc. Erick Sermon and those early AA hip hop artist had roots in the South. Early hip hop from Cool DJ Herc and them in the 70's derives from Jamaican dancehall, reggae and rocksteady, and that Jamaican music in turn was influenced by southern American RnB and Soul. Everything goes full circle.
