UAB is America’s best large employer: Forbes

UAB has been named America’s Best Large Employer by Forbes, spotlighting the school and its hospital’s service to the community during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The financial magazine made the distinction yesterday, putting the school ahead of other schools, such as Yale University, which placed fifth.

Much of the accompanying story focused on the work UAB Hospital did in 2020 as coronavirus cases affected ever sector of society.

So Amazon now has or is building distribution warehouses in and around Birmingham/Bessemer, Mobile, and Huntsville.

Not that big of a deal since they are building them everywhere now, but considering there were none 3 years ago......

Once again we're out here trying to keep China off your backs.

Gov. Kay Ivey made the announcement in Montgomery this morning, touting the Westwater Resources and Alabama Graphite plant as the first large scale facility of its kind in the U.S., and supplying a key component for the next generation of electrically-powered vehicles.

The plant will be built in Kellyton, near Alexander City. A second phase of the project will push the total investment to $124 million, state officials said. Construction will begin later this year, with the plant operational by the end of 2022. The jobs will pay an average hourly wage of $21.15.

Ivey hailed the announcement as crucial to maintaining Alabama’s position in auto manufacturing as the industry continues to transition to electric-powered vehicles. Both Mercedes-Bend and Hyundai have made commitments recently toward EV production, with Hyundai announcing earlier this year it is committing $7.4 billion in the U.S. by 2025 to produce electric vehicles. Mercedes-Benz announced last year that its Tuscaloosa County plant will begin producing electric SUVs in 2022, after a $1 billion commitment.

“Not only has the United States government declared graphite as a critical component to our nation’s economy and national security, but this plant will make Alabama the national leader in graphite production,” Ivey said.

Graphite is a key component in lithium-ion batteries and a conductivity enhancer for all types of batteries, including the common lead-acid batteries in traditional vehicles. Currently, the U.S. relies chiefly on graphite for batteries from China......

When operational, Alabama Graphite’s processing plant will produce about 7,500 tons of battery-grade graphite a year initially, eventually expanding to 15,000. The battery in an average electric vehicle needs about 175 to 200 pounds of graphite. Ford’s new electric F-150 truck, the Lightning, is expected to need roughly 450 pounds of graphite.

Have you all heard about the proposed Interstate 14?

Interstate 14 — Youth Infrastructure Coalition

(Demopolis) My hometown will finally get interstate access.:mjcry:

I see folks complaining about wasted money already.:mjpls: Saying the area is the way it is because of the people. If Von Braun had not chose Huntsville for the rocket program then Huntsville would just be another Florence, Gadsden, or Scottsboro, maybe. They are already widening Hwy 43 to 4 lanes from Tuscaloosa to Mobile so this will just open up the black belt area.
