All I will say is if you plan to read def start from the beginning. That's all I will say. Or at least where you left off if you read up to a certain point :hubie:
Honestly I forgot the specifics of what the manga was doing but it definitely was different shyt going on than the show right now, so I am aware of it somewhat

But I decided if I'm good with how the show is going I don't wanna ruin it being a manga purist :yeshrug: same with Kaiju no.8 I'm not reading it at all just in case they do something different I'm not irritated by it. It ain't worth it in the long run if it's just gonna ruin my experience

Already happened with Solo Leveling cuz I wanted to be greedy and read ahead :russell: never clapping myself like that again

I've seen every episode of Frieren.

What am I missing? How does this get mentioned as "best show ever"?

Don't get me wrong it's a chill little show, I'm not hating at all, but what's the thing that is getting people all gaga over it.

What's breaking the mold here?

The slightly autistic elf mage? Are weebs identifying with her?

It's a story about what happens after the hero's journey as a unique premise in the relam of fantasy.

This show is more so about the journey not the destination. You see Frieren and over the course of the season you see her grow so much on an emotional level. Her moment of not realizing how short someone lives can be is someone anyone who lost a loved one can empathize. Less about her elf longevity, but being there and spending time with them when they had the chance.

Her journey continues with both Fern and Stark. This is also their journeys too. Stark will get more focus in S2 since he got sidelined at the end of S1. Though with Fern, you see how much Frieren influences her, but at the same time the effect she has on Frieren. Hell the whole evolution of Serie → Flamme → Frieren → Fern.

You also see how the old party has influence on the new gang. How Frieren is this party's Himmel. Fern and Stark being the role of Heiter & Eisen. The mage exam is honestly one of the weaker arcs in the manga and the anime elevated it like crazy.

Lastly, the world building and magic system introduced is top-notch in execution. Unlike Mushoku Tensei, Frieren isn't plagued by awful character writing.

Frieren is one of those series you appreciate the more times you watch it. Not even brining up the animation, but outside of the first part of the mage exam it was at a high level consistently.

This…..

Like it’s not a bad anime…. Cuz trust I’ve seen worse.

But I too Dont get the hype….. it feels dry and static at times. And the peaks are not as high as the peaks of a BUNCH of other shows

like there some shows where it’s torture waiting for them to come back.

But this show…. If it was announced they are on hiatus or not coming back to say 2030.

My reaction would be :manny:

But I was pissed when say Black Clover ended or the long gaps with say AOT

I been seeing a lot of Chinese stuff in here lately. So I decided to try out a basketball one called Left Hand Layup. I think I'm liking it.

Literally none of this stuff is groundbreaking, all you did is give a synopsis

To give @WIA20XX a real answer, it's a mixture of the people who already read the manga so they're rating it off of the entire story and not just what we've seen so far in the anime + the people who just rank good animation very high, completely ignoring that that's moreso on the studio that's working on it than the story itself

A lot of the things you see in Frieren are common in many fantasy series. But how it is executed is the main point. Which is the main point I was trying to illustrate. The themes are things people can resonate with. Frieren's regret, Stark's cowardice, etc. The character writing is top-notch and the big arc in S2 will highlight this. Add also the top-notch world building and lore. These are things so much of the usual popular anime are missing. Kind of why so many people come to praise it. It being the #1 anime on MAL, I prob agree to an extent it is overrated because there are other series just as good that don't get the shine Frieren got.

Of course, that's the thing with anime adaptations. It isn't fair. Kingdom S1 didn't deserve that god awful animation. The Promised Netherlands didn't deserve to have that fukked up pacing in S2. I prob could list out more, but I think you get my point.

It's a bit amusing with this show how well done the story and writing. Yet how the animation is barely servicable. It does a good enough job at hiding the poor animation which is something TBATE lacks, as for anyone that has seen those clips.

Honestly, Akitsu isn't a bad guy. He can be a little be a little troublemaker, but he is a good dude. His use of tsukumogami is very neat.

I mentioned last week how Natsu calling Jinya big brother hits something deep for him. His failure. Tbh with Natsu speaking some words of wisdom to Jinya I thought is she all controlled by someone? Jinya having that piece that matches the one Natsu had. Speculation if Jinya had one piece could the piece that Akitsu originally had been to Suzune once? Eventually, after she raged out, she lost it and ended up with Akitsu? Kind of feels like I am throwing stuff out there but maybe?

So in the future there will be the Jinta shrine. We refer to him as Jinya right now when he is a demon, but if the shrine is somewhere he can come back to. In essence, a place where his humanity can be despite being a demon. Makes sense for it to be called Jinta. I do assume we go back where the episode left off before the timeskip.

It's not just that though. It's a well crafted story with a lot of very likable characters. I get that Madhouse is a dope ass studio (HxH is the GOAT), but you still need good source material to make a great anime no matter how good the studio is.

Also worth pointing out this isn’t the same madhouse from back then. Much like with medalist animators came to work under the team because how much they admire the manga. Although Frieren didn’t need the high level animation but it really made great use of it by elevating the manga. Though with Frieren and also Orb you are seeing a resurgence from madhouse. Which is cool too see :ehh:

I do think a great anime staff can get the most out of an average source material. Demon Slayer is one example of this. Though sword smith arc is when I noticed some rough points. When the source material is towards the bad side there is only so much they can do. Mha after S3 is an example of that.
